An Interesting Future for Outerra

Though theoretically since Outerra tries to run primarily on the GPU, more CPU resources should be available for other types of calculations......

Oh yeah, it can definitely handle systems, AI, weather, etc. It just doesn't have the API available currently.

  • Well, Outerra has had only one variety of flora (pines) for quite some time, but have little birdies seen the future?

  • I think of it this way: there are two approaches to making a sim, particularly a flight sim. One is you make the planes and the things that go with the planes, and paste a somewhat satisfactory sketch

Version 0.8.2.4589

  • workaround for Nvidia <400 series cards driver bug causing initialization fail
  • block world shaders from being used before login and update check, shader precompilation doesn't cause abort on compile/link errors, allowing to check for updates
  • fixed camera restore after getting back from map projection mode
  • limiter and atmo adjustments on low GPU memory (<1GB)

People with Nvidia <400 series cards that got stuck please download the patch manually:

is there any news about them doing a kickstarter for flight sim?

Last I knew, they still intend to do one eventually, but only when other important features of the engine are in place. Meanwhile in answer to my question, they just confirmed that they are have partially completed the conversion to 64bit which will be an important next step.

Question: I know it had been mentioned that you intended to go 64bit maybe by the end of the year. Is that still an ongoing possibility?

Cameni's Answer:  Yes, finishing the 64 bit build of our Chromium browser wrapper, other libs should be easier.

As for the Kick-starter, Cameni recently said that:

For aircraft systems simulation we plan to use a component system based on what we are already using internally, that allows to define components that are either implemented in C++ plugins, or scripted in JS.

Actually, the goal is to use all this for a prototype aircraft for the demo that can be used for Kickstarter simulator campaign, and we are looking at how this can/should be done.

Looking at this today and thinking how cool it will be when Outerras depiction of earth starts to match these levels. I think its going to be when they dial in the colors and add more geographic variety that things will really take off.

Getting closer...

I agree, his efforts to keep us updated in the progress of Outerra is fantastic, and hopefully those amazing videos will make more people interested in Outerra. This thread must not die.

Not all Outerra users are into planes! This user likes trucks, and in particular the details of the trucks, going so far as to model the suspension and the actual transmission and its components. One wonders at the detail it would be possible to put on a plane!

not to sound stupid but are some of those pics you posted real or from outtera . they seriously look real to me

WOW!!! That is impressive!

Imagine what the developers could do if they had a plan and a well funded team (and were not only a couple of guys playing around as a hobby )!

Perhaps its better this way. Sometimes, a big company is a greedy company. Its good that thay take their time devoping Outerra, rather than pushing incomplete and unstable features out, so they get more buyers.

You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling

I can only imagine how insane this will look once trees cast proper shadows...

Brandon Filer

Forests look way better now compared to older screenshots. I agree with Brandon, once trees will be able to cast shadows like in Prepar3D 2.x, we'll get a photoreal result.
