February 14, 201412 yr I'm trying to diagnose why I (and several others) are getting non-performance related stutters and looking for trends/commonality. If you could answer my poll questions that might help me proceed in a direction. To be clear, the stutters I'm interested in are ones where your frame rate is locked and doesn't fluctuate but your image visibly jitters. See this video for what I mean and note my frame rate is constant: Please be aware these are all the things I've tried so far to remove the stutter problem that have NOT worked: 1. Unlimited or locked 2. Moving display sliders all the way to the left (min) 3. nVidia Inspector settings (even set everything to application controlled) 4. Fresh new install of V2.1 (prior version completely wiped) 5. Any aircraft produces this problem 6. Nothing enabled in EXE.XML or DLL.XML Contrary to popular belief I haven't "tweaked" anything, only changes I've tested are done within the UI - Display settings from within P3DV2.1 (I don't consider that tweaking). For those of you with the stutter problem, can you identify if SimConnect is loaded (check Control panel)? And indicate if you use SimConnect? Could you unplug all your controllers and fly keyboard only and indicate if you still have stutters? Also could you indicate Full Version 2.1 install or if a Patch 2.1 install? I know, a lot to ask, but if you get a chance it would be most appreciated. Some folks are not having any issues, so obviously there is some key difference and I'm trying to discover that difference to help me move forward with P3DV2.1. Cheers, Rob.
February 14, 201412 yr More info: Patch install over fresh 2.0 install. I do use SC as I have been using a networked install of ASE for weather until ASN for P3D2 is released. For me, any form of hard fps limiting causes issues, which bugs me a little as I really have no need of 60 fps in the cruise, but there it is. The best results so far have been with running unlimited with TB/Vsync enabled. 2.1 vs 2.0/FSX seems much better at maintaining smoothness while fps are fluctuating. All that said it isn't perfect, for me the only real difference is that I no longer run any hard fps limiters, just vsync. Regards,Brian Doney
February 14, 201412 yr Voted yes. Unfortunately. 2.1 stutters more than 2.0 did. It isn't as severe as on your video though. At one moment it was but I found out that was due to the onscreen VAS monitor of FSUIPC. (Seems LM didn't solve the problem where performance drops when there is something else on screen?). I run Win7 and use Saitek Combat Rudder pedals plus a cheap Logitech joystick.
February 14, 201412 yr I get absolute smooth operation with ALL default aircraft. ( Every controller imaginable, simconnect networked computer, FSUIPC in the XML.DLL,NEW V2.1 install). The only addon aircraft I have installed is the MJQ400 and it causes stutters and badly at times, but of course it isn't V2.1 supported/certified. -AS2012 3 layer clouds, on client computer. -Orbx Global -REX 4 -FSUIPC -I have no Simconnect in the Control panel and there shouldnt be though I do have the LM SDK there. NI Setting: Antialiasing (Dx1x) setting to Bio Shock AA Mode : Enhance AA setting: AA_MODE_METHOD_SUPERSAMPLE_4X_BIAS AA TRANS: 4xSGSS P#D Settings FPS Unlimited All settings Med. AA settings to 4.
February 14, 201412 yr Hi Rob, 2.1 fresh install running like silk, but I do remember stuttering in FSX. I seem to recall an article about FSX and stutters and how the CPU was spending a lot of time converting textures and /or scenery. IE: low rez to high rez or high to low. Or maybe one format to another. Sorry, it was more than a week ago and brain drain and all that. Maybe this rings a bell with someone who can help you more. -J 13700KF | RTX 4090 @ 1440 | 64GB DDR5 | 2 x 1TB SSDs | 1TB M.2 NVMe
February 14, 201412 yr Hi Rob Is this only with the Majestic Dash? Because this one will stutter in outside view no matter what you (or me) do. Some of the devs mentioned this as a small tradeoff using a physics-engine outside of the core sim. They actually SLEW the aircraft through the 3dspace, resulting in frequent sudden jumps. Thats at least how I understood it. So it has not much to do with p3d2.1 I guess. My fresh install runs like a dream with all my addons installed. Only the Dash jerks a bit, but this doesent bothers me much, because in vc its smooth.... Have fun, Marcel
February 14, 201412 yr Commercial Member No stutters. No NI profile. Installed on SSD Full 2.1 install / No 3rd party add-ons. Various Saitek controllers plugged in and functional. February 14, 201412 yr I've uninstalled, so can't help with the specific debugging procedures you suggest, but I will add that, for me, stutters were significantly worse in turns, and near airports, for whatever that is worth, perhaps a bit less if I disabled TrackIR and just used the hat switch to pan views (which, let's face it, I wasn't going to do as a regular thing!). I was running the patched version, no tweaks, no nVidia inspector settings, with only Orbx v2 approved scenery on Win7 with controllers.
February 14, 201412 yr for me, stutters were significantly worse in turns, and near airports, for whatever that is worth, Kinda like FSX was before we got Vsync working and seem to resolve that issue.
February 14, 201412 yr No stutters. No NI profile, No 3rd party add-ons, Unlimited framerate / Vsync off. LOD - medium / most graphics sliders one notch lower than full right It seems like people reporting the most problems have violated one or more of the above. There's one other item that comes to mind: using FSX config tweaks in P3D. Unlimited framerate is an odd one. No matter what is displayed, can you be absolutely certain that there's nothing running that limits your frames? Think outside the box on this one. Your monitor refresh rate shouldn't be a problem... but I wouldn't bet too much money on that; your graphics driver might be doing something odd. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! Not sure why unlimited frames is odd... It's recommended by LM for 2.1. Prior to my acquisition of an NVidia card (coinciding with the release of 2.0), I ran an ATI card for a few years and I often ran an unlimited framerate in FSX, only ever limiting the framerate when flying somewhere that was really un-demanding, since too high of a frame-rate would start to cause surges and spikes and resulting stutters. With my 780ti, I follow the current wisdom in FSX using NI to limit frames for smoothness. But FSX != P3Dv2, so.... ^_^ Regardless, I'm pretty sure there's nothing limiting my framerate in P3D, since my framerates are varying between high 50's to low 30's, depending on where I am and where I'm looking. Great info Marcel, thank you! But sadly I can duplicate these stutters with any aircraft not just the MJC Q400 ... perhaps I should make a video of the same flight in the default Carenado A36 to avoid any confusion over the issue. FYI, I used the MJC Q400 in 2.0 without any stutter issues. Appreciate everyone's input and will keep at this in the hope I find a solution. Worst case is I just stick with V2.0 and hope for a fix in V2.2 when/if it's released.
February 14, 201412 yr Hm, odd, just got obvious stutters when I ran Process Explorer in the background. So even when P3D v2.1 was in focus, I got very obvious stutters and they stopped when I completely quitted PE. Turning PE on again, brought back the stutters. Do you have some monitoring software (like PE) running in the background? Maybe v2.1 is worse in a multitasking environment as 2.0...
February 14, 201412 yr Not sure if this is related, but I thought it was interesting. Take a look at core load running limited 20 fps vs running unlimited with vsync: I can reproduce this time and again, external or internal limiter show the same. Not really sure what's going on here, but it certainly would explain why I have had a better experience running unlimited. Regards,Brian Doney
