February 17, 201412 yr I noticed that too,on a day when flightsim.com had over 2700 users online. I just figured it wouldn't be a good idea to throw that in anyone's face. Different courses, different horses. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
February 17, 201412 yr The surprise is in the number of simultaneous users online without performance degradations. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
February 18, 201412 yr I guess I'm missing the exact point being made........ Unless the performance is the point? :unsure: We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... February 18, 201412 yr Moderator As I pointed out in the same thread at flightsim.com this is comparing apples to oranges. The numbers for AVSIM represent only those logged into the forum server, as the library server is a separate machine with it's own logon system. The numbers reported at flightsim.com on the other hand are for both the forums and their library system. The vast majority of those shown logged in are using the library and have never posted a single message in their forums! It's also a fact that forum activity will generate a lot more back-and-forth communications between the user's computer and the website, whereas downloading files is effectively passive once the file(s) have begun downloading. I'm not sure what point is trying to be made here either, except to possibly just stir the pot... :wacko2: Fr. February 18, 201412 yr Author You may my missed last thread on Flightsim A quick suggestion shows that there were FlightSim 709 users based on the individuals on the forums. There were fewer members (652) in the list at the end of the forum. The difference (57) could be accounted for Guests. The remaining Guests (1464) could be those using the File Library. Gerry Howard
February 18, 201412 yr Moderator I simply haven't gotten to flightsim.com in my daily forum-diving, so no I haven't see your reply there yet... :LMAO: Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator

February 18, 201412 yr Rather uncertainly wearing my dunce cap....... What does all of this "prove" I am totally missing the whole point. Is it that the other forum has more people? Is it that their server is better? Granted that either of those were true..... Then what?? We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. February 18, 201412 yr It really doesn't matter who has more visits at any given point in time, since 10 minutes later those numbers change again. Besides, visitors will gravitate to a site that provides them what they need. This is best illustrated by the fact that some people like voxATC, others VATSIM and others FSX ATC. Each user is right for their own reasons, in the same way that each user will choose AVSIM or any other site. Rob Rob Marton
February 18, 201412 yr I am logged onto the other site 24 / 7 and that doesn't mean I'm creating any traffic. How many others may do the same here or there? If one calls anyone logged on traffic at one site and the other site does not then the numbers just might be meaningless and quite subject to interpretation. In the end, who the bleep cares. Why someone wants to make a fuss about it is really the question, as is their motive. Mel
February 18, 201412 yr I am not sure what the point of this thread is either. But, having said that, let me share a few points to note: This image was just captured at 1640 EDT today: The first thing to note is that we put a time window on what we count as "users online". Why add a time window? Because if someone is reading or writing a message, they could have been dropped from the count, when they are actually still in the system. After 15 minutes, we consider any inactivity as a sign that the user has logged off or gone elsewhere. We could open that window up and the numbers would rise significantly, but I personally don't think that would be an honest representation of members online and working within the system. I don't see a time window on the other site's data. Secondly, "guests" are defined on AVSIM as being either lurkers, or referrals from the search engines. In other words, guests could be people doing a search on Google and finding a link and following it to AVSIM. We allow those of course. Another, more objective view is to use a monitoring system like Alexa. Here is the rankings as of just a minute ago: Finally, the best comparison is between logged activity. We just posted that information for the entire year of 2013, which you can find here: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/434962-2013-annual-statistics/ I think the PAIR of most compelling statistics is registrations and topic posts: At the end of the day, it is as someone said above; "Different Strokes for Different Folks".
