Oh, and there is another - psychological - factor: the better you know a region, the more you want to be it accurate (like you know it from real life ... every house where you know them .... etc.), whereas in regions which you don't know, you can much easier accept just, plain "plausible" autogen (as long as it looks halfway believable).

This is very true, when flying in the US/NZ/AUS I don't really care too much about the scenery and think the default and HD Mesh v2 autogen looks good, the same goes with ORBX scenery in the US. However, when flying in towns I know in Europe the autogen just looks wrong and it ruins the experience for me. This is one reason why I never liked the scenery Orbx did for the UK and Ireland. I also guess it matters how high you fly, if you are in a jet at 30,000 feet, it doesn't really matter, but if you're flying a heli over your town, then accurate scenery is a must (for me)

Agreed, but for me the funny part is around Seattle in the USA.

Grew up flying real planes in the PNW and it just kills it instantly for me to have some "wrong things" here and there.

Screenshots look nice...they always do.

Seriously, though, getting some even better scenery that's realistic is, for me, the final thing that X-Plane needs to be sensational.

As an example, I just bought and am playing around with OrbX Seiku for P3D v2.2 - wow.  Truly shows how amazing and majestic modern scenery *can* be.

Knock P3D/FSX all we want, but that particular scenery pack looks dead on real (I know...been to this spot many many times) and is just "beautiful" to fly over.

Less is more? I hate that. I like to have more of the good things in life. But in this special case you are right. With my dated notebook (see my hardware), I had pimped my XP to death. Weeks ago I have deleted OSM, Simheaven Photosceneries and for the rest of the western world the HD Mesh files. No HDR and still at lower settings than Mitch uses, I'm back to fluid flying. And yes, 10.3 at it's early beta stage is a big improvememt. Nevertheless, it's a call for a new rig.

And the same is absolutely true for X-plane too! Technically there is absolutely nothing which stops devs from making similarly fantastic scenery on X-plane. BUT the point is - as always - that someone has to do it (either for money, for free or for what ever else B) ) ... but just waiting for it (when everybody is just waiting) helps nobody ...

So, to prove that it is possible, just look at CZST Stewart:

... and you could such quality at any scale ... but it needs dedication, time, resources ... what ever ...

Totally agreed!!

Wasn't saying it isn't possible in XP...just wish we could get more deve making for XP is what I more meant.

If I had the skill I would absolutely be doing it!

I'm just a graphic designer - no idea about the 3d modeling and scripting parts that I'm sure are needed.

Yessir, Ralf!   Less, as per my thread...is more...very detailed suburbs, clear...CLEAR out to the horizon...no blur...no defocus. Exceptional!  I mean...take a real close look at some of these streets, and I hope you used the full size tab to bring up the true grab.  The houses are exceptionally detailed...even their landscaping!  Look at the main street heading South in one of my cockpit shots. There is no other sim that will produce these graphics...houses, each clearly definable...and CLEAR out to the infinite. Show me another sim with a screen grab like that.  You won't be able to....P3D and FSX can't even produce that output, even at the highest settings.  They blur out to the horizon....  This sim is now an absolute joy to own..and fly...at the full-open beauty of it.  I haven't even grabbed a mountain range yet....and believe me..it is amazing on my monitor.

Wow. WOW. W!O!W!

I am running:-

1.) x-plane 10.30b2

2.) EFASS Weather injector

3.) Skymaxx pro

4.) urbanmaxx pro

5.) caranedo king

6.) Flywithlua tweaks

7.) HD Mesh V2

resolution of 1920x1080

Run on a GTX 770 4 GB

16 GB RAM

Core 4670K @ 4ghz

track IR 5

all X-plane 10 settings are at max. (textures are compressed)

WOW AGAIN! 30FPS locked at 1/2 vysnc. NEVER EVER drops below. Simple as that. Skymaxx pro? MAXED! gorgeous!

This sim is AMAZING, smoothest flight ever, Unreal flight experience. I fly small GA in real life, and let me tell you, this new x-plane is AS CLOSE AS YOU WILL GET! Simple as that. Its so fluid, and the view out of the window, well, stunning!

I had to report this, its just absolutely brilliant!

And this is day flying, Don't get me started on the night! WOW isn't a big enough word!

Ian...a most hearty 'welcome' to the newly defined, Dark Side. You and I are the first two DECLARED members...and I imagine, life-long members of the LESS is MORE club on Avsim, lol   I have no intention of ever changing anything on the Graphics Settings Menu.  Nothing, past yesterday.  The sim is gorgeous..and runs (as per my snaps of this morning) like a champ!  Tweaking and Poking, setting, and re-setting on my copy of XPX.X is fully...retired, lol.  No OSM, nothing but what comes with each update from LR..and only will add in airports, planes, and the like.  I like what I see..and like it, very much, I do!

Post Edit:  Ian..a question, are you running XPX now...flat-out...every feature at its max setting as I am?  The ONLY, only thing that can be set, and is NOT at its highest setting in my copy...is Screen Resolution...I have it at the second highest setting of Very High only because I actually like the difference visually between this, and its big brother, Extreme.  I have everything running in parallel to you, in the add-ons.  So, basically we are twinning it.  I found that even if you do go to 18 FPS...it still is absolutely stutter and jerk free.  Approaches are now something else, ....you feel you are flying...really taking the bird down to the numbers. There is no other sim...that can offer you truly, stutter and jerk free performance...other than XPX in its latest incarnation.  I own them all...run them all on the same platform, and not one of them other than this..can even come close to max'ing out the graphic elements...let alone, doing that without so much as a hiccup from animated motion.   Since yesterday, and found out by sheer accident...I couldn't be more satisfied with virtual flying..than this moment.  That screen grab this morning snapped as I was approaching KFNT (custom airport) was simply a floating to the numbers..and keeping the nose pointed towards the runway's center-line .  Like you said, the word 'wow'...doesn't cut it.

Exactly:) haha

Oh and one more thing, RC simulations based in the UK, just finished building the RAF an official sim setup. David Jason unveiled it, the cadets are using it, AND it's based on X-Plane 10.30b2!

X-plane is the future! It's time to shine is now!

Hey Ian...grab a chunk of .30b1 and come join me in a flight between KLAS-------------------------------------------->KSAN, tonight!

Just took off...and the desert with  HD Mesh V2...well...what can i say...------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------KSAN.

The Pyramid looks great in the HDR sunset....

Just about at cruise...heading out over the mountains, outbound from Las Vegas... :)

Wow, finally got round to using the beta. Seeing a 7-10fps improvement across the board. The difference between what used to be 23fps over London and the 30 I'm now getting is amazing.

+1. Real pilots know how invaluable X-Plane is as a flight simulator. Who needs ORBX when he has a FLIGHT simulator in his hands? :P

After reading all this during the last day or so, I decided today to do a clean install. (Yes, you can have two copies on the same computer)  Yes, I backed up the original on an external drive several days ago before updating to beta1, and then updated the one I had been using.  I saw some improvement in FRs and clouds looked better, but other than that, didn't see much.  Then I took out OSM which killed my airports, but things actually looked better.  With today's clean install, adding nothing but some Carenado aircraft and the MU2, I flew out of some bare airports, but when I left the ground I was amazed.  I no longer see the washed out flat buildings I used to see until I gained altitude.  The buildings are there - residential and otherwise.  The population of buildings seems more plausible.  The clouds are beautiful and the mountains around the area where I fly (KROA) are as accurate as any I have ever seen in a simulator.  Flight characteristics are great.  I still have the original with the OSM airports, etc. but I really like this build.  Now, for the best part - with the same settings I had before (rendering), I am in the 40s and up to 60s.  My PC and video specs are listed, so help yourself.  With the promise of airports being added with future betas, these guys at Laminar have, I believe, hit the mark.

Me too!!!

I gave up resisting and re-installed XP10 just to test this...

I did nonetheless install Andras's lines and farms for Europe and USA, as well as his Superb HD V2 for my region ( for a start, because I do not want to start filling my HD with XP stuff again... ).

Indeed, pushing the rendering options to the tops, and running in HDR mode, with all default and a couple of 3pd aircraft, makes quite a difference from what I remember XP10 was last time I had it installed.

So... Mitch is very right! Thax a LOT Mitch for the Alert!!!

Now... if only Austin could do something for the lausy prop effects :-/... I know we now have a few datarefs we can use to make some "Magic", but I would really like to see the problems addressed by Laminar in the core FDM!

Main Simulation Rig:

Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti, 1 TB & 500 GB M.2 nvme drives, Win11.

Lenovo TB310FU 9,5" Tablet for Navigraph and some available external FMCs or AVITABs

Jose, I hope you stick around a bit longer on X-Plane . Indeed, it's a little disappointing that the problems are still there, and I was hoping they would get addressed finally in 10.30, but oh well, maybe next time. Let's see what people will do with the new datarefs though, it should be interesting, and hopefully it will mean we will see developers creating/using external FDEs like the Dash Q8 (My all time favourite on FSX, I miss you, please come to X-Plane). I still really love helicopters in X-Plane, and I also have both the R66 in X-Plane and FSX, and there really is no comparison, so it isn't all bad.

I also picked up the C172RG from Alabeo yesterday and had a fly around with it in the beta 2, and even with World2XPlane scenery, performance has improved, but, the best part is that they have finally fixed the black halo around the lights in HDR mode, so scenery looks much better at night now.
