Both Kyle and Froogle have mentioned the ability to update the wind data mid flight through the data link feature. I was curious to know where the updated wind information is coming from (since the original is from a downloaded file with the wind information only available from when you downloaded it).

If the original is coming from a downloaded file, it would be pretty logical to assume you'd download a new file, would it not? ;)

It'd really add to the immersion effect in the future if it could download the winds dynamically through ASN (or weather software of choice) without the need of generating a weather file by just having a route entered into the FMS.

Check out my repaints and downloads, all right here on AVSIM

Not quite...

I'm somewhat worried that this might come across the wrong way (OMG Froogle released something, and then Kyle did right after!!!), and I'm somewhat worried that mine won't produce any extra detail, but just in case, have a look at mine...it might answer some:

Thanks Kyle a lot more informative than froogles hearing all the work arounds and that you dont need asn.

Thanks for the informative video Kyle. Good to know that it's possible to update the wind and descent forecast data now.

Awww! How much I'd love to see these features in the NGX too.

if they add this to the NGX and MD11,

NGX highly likely, MD-11 is sadly a closed sim now.

Thanks for the videos! These are nifty features. I was wishing for some manner of CPDLC integration, perhaps with the already existing ACARS network from hoppie.nl, but I knew that was a long shot at best. ;) I feel like a major add-on like the 777 integrating such functionality would really spur adoption where appropriate on VATSIM/IVAO/etc, though.

It seems to be it would be release first half of Jul 2014 according the Facebook entry

Don't worry, there are people who will try to shoehorn this into PMDG :)

You will have to do with basic standalone IDU for starters, data depending on what PMDG makes available through SDK. But once SDK is out, I will try and look into this and petition PMDG to make for better integration :)

The facebook entry is a copy of RSRs post in General section.

One question, I've seen on the SP1 preview videos that the datalink also inserts fuel reserve values and cruise altitude etc... where is it taking that data from ? From the PFPX flight plan that is exported into the PMDG RTE format ? Does that contain the fuel figures (like reserve) ?

If I'm not mistaken, the cost index is taken from a fixed value in the PMDG FMC config... right ?

Thanks

You're making it a little more difficult than it needs to be...

You set the fuel on the FUEL page in the CDU, so it's a variable that the simulation knows has easy access to.  From there, it just guesses the res values.

I think this is just the beginning in opening this feature up to other resources in the future, where, sure, you could pull in external file values, but as it is right now, it's just pulling local variables (similar to how you'd double-click the ZFW and CG and they auto-populate).

As I mentioned in the video, yes.  It's a default for the aircraft.ini that can be altered for the specific livery in the menus.
