Will this feature be configurable in the FMC? Just out of curiosity, as I'm sure I would use the feature regardless.

Oh this is so cool - can't wait. I know now it will be hard to go back to the NGX (until it's updated), not wanting to manually input everything.  This is going to make me lazy!

I like the ding-dong sound (same as cabin ready). Nice feature to play that sound more often :)

I know it was unintended, but that just reminded me of Günther...

(If you don't get it: Gunther Ding Dong)

The following text is meant to be a joke and funny:

Man, if only someone thought to write that in the forum in this very thread, anticipating people might ask that very question...

Extra Info / Disclaimer, and a note to head off some of post-release "bug flagging:"
These are company options.  Some planes will have them, some will not.  Some will have default CIs at value X; some will have values Y, Z, Q, and R.  If you notice a plane doesn't have the feature you were expecting, go into the PMDG SETUP> menu and have a look to see it's enabled.  Remember that those with the little notepad icon in the Ops Center have confirmed, accurate setups to what the real operator uses.  As such, some of, or all of the datalink features might not be there.

I think it would be cool if we were able to see the ATIS information via the COMM page in the lower EICAS, that seems doable. Perhaps in a future service pack this would be a neat option. Until. then I cant wait for SP1 and the 77W.

another question I have is how does one do a SELCAL check. Is this also done via the FMC/ACARS/CPDLC. Best regards happy landing everyone.

A SELCAL (selective calling) check has nothing to do with Data Link.

Selcal is an HF radio communication feature.

HF radio communication is horrible in comparison to the VHF communication we you use all the time.

HF has all kinds of noise and cracks and inteference.

The good thing about HF is that you can communicate with it while far far far away from the station you are talking to.

Like talking to Gander radio on HF while in the middle of the Atlantic.

That is impossible to do with VHF!

Having to maintain a listening watch on an HF radio would drive one mad!

The noise, screething, etc hour after hour, it is just unbearable.

So they invented SELCAL.

On first HF radio contact with for instance Gander radio, you would say "request SELCAL check" and give him your SELCAL code.

(every aircraft in the world has a different one, that is fixed to the aircraft, and printed on a sticker in the cockpit below the FO PFD/ND or somewhere else clearly visible)

I could not find a SELCAL code on my PMDG777 (default livery) by the way.

The controller in Gander will then punch in this code in his SELCAL machine and send you a ping. In the cockpit, upon reception of the ping, you would get an EICAS Comm message "SELCAL" and you would hear a Ding Dong.

You then tell Gander "SELCAL check ok" and that is all.

From then on you can turn off the HF volume because any time the HF controller needs something from you, you will hear a Ding Dong.

And then you would have to contact the controller.

Today, with Data Link at many places, HF serves only as a backup in case data link fails.

So after the initial SELCAL check you dont use HF anymore and continue with data link communications.

Partly true, due to the nature of the code EG HB-IF, there are duplicates due to number of airplanes with HF and SELCAL but I believe they are assigned to areas that would never overlap. At least that's what I have read.

Hi Guys,

sorry I know that question has been surely answered somewhere. But is there any time when we can expect the release, like Summer 2014 oder Summer 2015?

Best regards

hpinter

summer 2015 is very likely.

With the ramp up in screenshots and videos from good sources I would say the release is very much going to happen this year.

I wonder if this going  be standard on all future PMDG aircraft! Nice future, if they add this to the NGX and MD11, my wallet is going to get a lot lighter, LOL

Thanks, O. Skinner

That's true and sometimes it happens they overlap, so both aircraft receive a ding dong sound. Of course, common sense is enough to understand the call is/is not for you.

The DES FORECAST feature has been added (and the WIND feature in general has been fixed/changed to be able to be updated)  With flights lasting upwards of two to three wind data cycles (they're good for 6 hours), requesting new information is rather important to ensure your actual data is more accurate than your planned data.  Additionally, the added ability to update the wind is a new feature, and that's extremely important for the DES FORECAST.

Both Kyle and Froogle have mentioned the ability to update the wind data mid flight through the data link feature. I was curious to know where the updated wind information is coming from (since the original is from a downloaded file with the wind information only available from when you downloaded it).
