DoveTail Games Buys Licensing Deal with Microsoft

It's what they do

Click "see all" on the downloadable content box and be amazed. They don't have all that DLC because no one is buying it.. It's a cash cow for them.  They regulary sell the base game for under $10 because all the $$$ is in DLC

Dove Tail Games is getting better at listening to the Railsim community. The Canadian Pass Route, and NEC New Haven route, have the new and much better Air Brake code in the routes, it makes for more realistic braking , is it perferct no, but DTG is getting better and allowing the 3rd party guys to start pushing the limits of realism.  DTG's major problem is they are based in europe tying to build American routes, with European  train handling and thinking.  They have finally after years of users  complaining got around to addressing the diferences in North American railroading and European railroading.  They are working hard on the next version of train-simulator based on the UNREAL 4 enginge that will allow for more realistic physics, and multiplayer.  Yes the EULA is tough, but there are 3rd party freeware, and paid developers workinging to make Train Simulator better. And with the announcement of going to steam I think it is a great idea, esay to distribute files and updates, and with no messy install, click on the file, and steam does the rest , installs easy and makes it easier for developers to get the latest files out to the users.

What I hope they do is fully intergrate steam with FSX multiplayer capablilty. That would make multiplayer life so much easier.

Good DTG, I wish you guys much success, but I hope you get some new flame proof suits, if you think the Trainsim crowd can be finicky, you have no idea how volcal this Flightsim crowd can be.

I am somewhat confused by these comments....which company isn't in it for the money?  If they see money in it I'm glad because maybe this hobby wont just die out as we old f@rts do.

I always find it funny to see the response of flight simming community to the thought of DLC.  You guys have been buying "DLC" longer than anyone else.

I am sad to hear of people's unhappiness with Dovetail's handling of RailSimulator and the number of bugs, but that is probably expected considering that they bought the failed RailSimulator from Kuju and released it themselves, probably with very little knowledge of the original designs and source code.  However, they are sort of getting into the same boat with FS\Flight since as far as I know no one from those teams are working with them (disclaimer, I was a dev on Flight, TS2 and somewhat FSX).  I really hope they make good use of the Flight codebase as it had so much more potential than what we were able to achieve before it was shutdown.  The tools alone are like night and day in terms of usability compared to the ones in FSX.  All it needs is some AI\ATC, jets and a little more content and I think the majority of people playing FS would seriously consider switching.

It's a cash cow for them.

Enough of a cash cow that they were able to buy the rights to MS consumer franchise with their spare change. Think about that for a second and realize the implications. It says things that many might not want to hear.

From a stability standpoint it is not even close to being ready for steam. No way will they put a monster like this on their platform. It will get gutted 1st to get rid of all the toxic code and bad behavior.

That's the problem. Nearly SIX years later they figured out how railroads work outside of their box.. And there is TONS AND TONS of past DLC that are still stuck with trains with the Physics of the Need For Speed series they don't and won't go back and fix.

The thing is, FSX came with the entire world and a broad selection of aircraft already. Those add-ons we buy improve the scenery and give us a great selection of aircraft. A flight simulator from Dovetail Games will probably come with very little content (like Microsoft Flight), and the quality of the DLC will be poor.

With FSX and XPX offered up on steam good for long term of the hobby. We need new blood and younger users to keep going long term.

Younger users want to kill things and crash. The 1st thing my grandsons and their friends want to do is climb to 10k and then nose down.  Then when the wings come off and it pauses they scratch their head.  Now, if you are talking about young folks who have a genuine interest in flying i.e. EAA's young eagles then maybe, but it would need to retain what realism it currently has.

I would rather wait and see.

FOR TS14.. In house DLC produced by DTG is indeed poor..  It's the stuff produced by 3PD, and published by DTG  that has all the advanced features, high quality textures, and comes close to simulating anything.. The stuff DTG produce is done on the uber cheap.

What will happen to the activation servers at Microsoft? If the deal gives DT sole distribution rights doesn't that spell trouble for us, or are we protected in any way? It would be quite ironic if FSX could no longer be activated while FS9 marched on.

FSX as been performing better than ever for me. Over the last couple of months I started thinking that I could easily live with the sim in its current state for years to come with out even adding any additional add ons. It would be a shame, after chasing the grail for so long, and having finally found a setup I am truly happy with, to now have to worry about its future existence.
