Clouds kill FPS in 2.3

Featured Replies

I made a test of all dll.xml/exe.xml entries some days ago. FSUIPC was not among the stutterers, at least not on my system,. However, you might be careful. If you start external programs via FSUIPC4.ini these might cause stutters with FSUIPC itself being clean.

Kind regards, Michael

I have just noted something when using the "fogged in" weather preset in P3D. I noticed a straight line roughly halfway up the windscreen that seemed to be some kind of boundary for the fog. In fact, I have noticed something similar with respect to the visibility setting (near the horizon when the Sun is low down). I would really like to sort that out if possible.

Well, I did this sequentially with 2.3 and got back to the performance that I had in 2.2:

1) Disabled HDR - this made a little bit of difference in heavy weather conditions... nothing new.

2) Made the volumetric cloud shader fix - this improved performance almost back to 2.2 levels.

3) Put the REX clouds at 512 and 32 bit. - all three together boosted everything back roughly to 2.2.

...

Hi jabloomf1230,

you got same performance as v2.2, but you had disabled HDR, so a different environment...

So, have you been able to get same performance running same graphics settings? This would do the difference. :)

Bye.

well I have to say that I am excited.

I have been fighting with low FPS and stuttering too the point I was about to give up and that was before I would even turn on REX4 w/essentials clouds.

Once I added real time weather I could use an "etch a sketch" and have a better experience, but that has changed.

I came home from work and spent 3 hours testing, making changes, tweak's, and testing again and I say that I can now fly with everything turned on including weather, thunderstorms and night flying and I only saw a few micro stutters.

Mind you this is with a 39" 4k monitor at 3840x2160 resolution, I didn't have this problem at this extreme when using a 32" at 1920 resolution.

I am extremely happy, I shut the system down for the evening and I will take another test flight again today and see if I need to pull the "etch a sketch" out or continue.

This is my first post in the avsim forum.  I have the exact same issue.  In Prepar3d V2.2, I didn't have any issues flying through clouds.  I've tried a few tweaks of my own without any luck.  I've read several articles and still no luck.  This article matches my exact issue.

Same story here, with previous versions of p3d no problems with overcast, even using different texture sets ( 32bit/dxt etc).

Now I cant fly normally through clouds anymore.

I have tried the //volumizing trick, but this does have no effect.

Still can't make proper use of the Nvidia 780GTX ( clouds in fsx was the reason why I shifted from ati to nvidia)'.

Just tried to modify Cloud.fx. On my side it has no (positive) effect, at all. Just taken off from CYVR (ASN with metar cycle of yesterday at 1900z), on course toward SEA, fps at 10 or worse, simply unflyable.

Very curious to know how would it have been with v2.2.

The fps impact due to clouds is quite massive.

Thank you Orbx, LM, Carenado, REX.

1024 cloud textures 32bit ... fps wasn't high, but the experience was fluid and that's more important to me.  No changes made to the Cloud.fx.

Cheers, Rob.

Rick99, have you tried unckecking the "in cloud visibility reduction" of ASN (under Settings/Visibility options). Apparently this has worked for other ASN users, who were still experiencing performance issues during heavy overcast after applying the fix. I'm assuming that you have already disabled cloud shadows in P3D (and Terrain Shadows, due to the Terrain Shadow bug in v.2.3).

and just enjoying myself with these clouds ...

there is an ASN update for P3D V2.3 users, haven't tried it yet, will do later.

Cheers, Rob.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I'll give a try. Terrain shadow and Cloud shadow both at 0, object shadow distance at 6 thousand meters.

Anyway, what I am noting is a huge performance drop not only within clouds, but flying over overcast clouds (e.g. now at FL300) as well, fps down at low 10 in some cases.

Anyone experienced a fps drop also in that situation?

Thanks.

I can get low FPS when flying over overcast clouds too. Without noticing much has changed they can shoot back up again. It is strange.

I don't seem to have any major stutters, and I'm not using FSUIPC at the moment. Anyone here NOT using that AND getting stutters?

I'm also not using FSUIPC at the moment (and my joystick is living dangerously under Win 8.1) and not getting any stutters. But I've not had much stuttering before either, even with it.

I have a lot of clouds ...here almost 90% O.C.
