Stuttering with b8?

What settings do you run if you don't mind me asking? Also do you use skymaxx pro2?

I use fairly high settings as far as the things that provide scenery.  I use HDR 2x & 4x (in that order).  I do not use any of the things in the area where deer run across the runway, but everything in the next block down (is it obvious that I am not at that computer now?) Shadows in cockpit, default water reflections, visibility settings high - and yes I use Skymaxx v2.

As far as HDR goes, I really do like it although it really bumps up the FRs without it.  If you have interior lights on in the passenger compartments, there is no light extending to the seats and the post lamps at airports don't illuminate the ground unless you have HDR on.

No, I do not use nVidia Inspector...  tried it, but it didn't seem to help.

I do have the gamma set at about 2.6/2.7 to give a (to me anyway) a more natural light.

Long time simmer (from back in the 80s) and I have tried X-Plane over several generations, but this one really does what it should.  Yes, I occasionally run FSX, but it just does not do the job anymore.

Oh yeah, I've said it before and I'll say it again - just throwing a video card into a older computer won't do it.  You have to build the whole system to be compatible with all the components or it just doesn't justify the money.

Ianrivaldosmith what driver do you have for your video card?

If you have nVidia card with 340.52 driver you will have stutters, roll back to 337.88.

340.52 it's known to have problems that you describe in x-plane!

Hi,

No hard- or software expert here, but from what I understand, X-Plane will only stutter (pause) when it is loading new scenery tiles (only happens rarely) or new textures.

If you overtax your system with stuff to display, there should be no stutters, but only a generally low framerate (this might depend on your direction of view!).

Even with a 4GB card you can run out of video memory, and I don´t think the indicator in X-Plane is 100% accurate. One way to try this would be to lower your texture resolution in the rendering settings and see if that helps.

Good luck, Jan

Last time i had stuttering XPX, was because i have set the executable to run in W7 compatibility mode. (in order to prevent xsquawkbox crashing the whole sim back then). Removing any compatibility mode restored my smooth flying. You could confirm if any compatibility mode is checked perhaps? Good luck

In my case stuttering was caused by overloaded scenery  i.e. World2XPlane & Simheaven photoscenery in Germany and running out of video memory, and lots of people have complained about this with systems much more powerful than mine. Here are a few things that generally help that have been reported:

1) Make sure texture compression is enabled.

2) Disable any unused scenery you're not using. e.g. Some people have both the older OSM2XP Europe scenery and World2XPlane scenery enabled at the same time. This is pointless and only causes tiles to take longer to load, and more memory to be used and stuttering when loading new tiles in the background.

3) Several users on the German forums reported updating their nvidia drivers fixed the stuttering.

4) If you're using Skymaxx Pro, disabling water reflections and god rays can win back some performance (At least it did for me).

The stuttering commonly happens when first starting out, and also when panning the view around or changing views in very complicated scenery. Shadows and high draw distance seemed to be the culprit here, and even if you have a powerful graphics card and lots of memory, it still seems to happen and hopefully the developers in X-Plane are looking into this.

Just to add, I've never completely solved the problem with the stuttering, I've only improved it slightly. X-Plane 10.30 has actually improved it a lot for me.

I have dealt with and discussed the stuttering for a few weeks now. On my machine, I get locked 30fps but stutters every 2-3 seconds. Through many tests, I can confirm the stuttering is NOT influenced by the following factors:

- VRAM usage

- VSYNC usage (either X-Plane setting or NI)

- SkyMaxx Pro (stutters occur even with clear skies)

More than anything, the region you fly in influences stutters. NYC regions stutters. But for example KDFW, while still having dense load of objects, is fluid. But I start to think it has to do with other terrain features rather than object density - aren't all US metropolitan regions very dense after all? Also, the stutters disappear at dusk / night. I have global shadows off, and since the amount of objects stays the same after sunset - I don't see how they could be to blame here. It is to a certain extent mysterious and looks like a bug.

It may have to do with the HD mesh - I am always running with it. However, since my system load never exceeds 50% (CPU and GPU), I refrain from believing that I am just asking for too much. As stated before, I achieve butter smooth 30fps - these stutters are an issue.

I was able to tackle stutters mostly by turning off HD - but in some regions such as NYC the stutters still persist. I have not tested 10.25 - so I am not sure if it is a b8 problem.

Three things I want to comment on:

1. You seem to be talking about stuttering in general, meaning your system can't handle the load which will result in low fps. I think what we are talking about here are so called "microstutters", meaning that while the sim runs smooth, every few seconds there will be a single stutter.

2. Contrary to what you say, actually downgrading drivers from 340.52 to 337.88 (as stated in this topic before) will help with the stutters - however for me only in non-HDR mode - everything stays the same in HDR.

3. When you say you have stuttering while panning around, you def. have a performance problem. "Microstutters" only appear while in a MOVING plane when scenery actually has to be generated/displayed. While panning around, it's totally smooth (unless you overtask your system).

I am going to give in, I reduced everything to setup for maximum speed, and still, every 2-3 seconds I get a stutter. I have reverted back to those nvidia drivers and it did nothing. I fired a backup copy of b7 up, and voila, no stutters!

Arghh!

Ok! Glad you fix it! Did you file a bug report? If they don't know about your problem, they won't fix it for final version and you might have the same problems after their release final version.

I never downgraded to b7 ... but it's good news because that indicates that it is indeed a bug, and has nothing to do with overtaxing your system. File a bug report, I did, too.

Maybe if you think about it, it's this bug that keeps RC1 from being released...

I have filed a report and will keep my fingers crossed, because if the RC doesn't fix it, then I will have to stick with B7! Smooth as silk....

Bravo! Let's hope they will fix the problem, I didn't notice on my system with b8 any stuttering, but if it's a bug let it be crushed!!

Maybe a dumb question, but how do you revert back to B7 from B8?

Tom

No way, he had a backup.

I think that if you uncheck the "participate in beta" checkmark and run the installer again, it will revert your copy to the last stable release version. Never tried that, though.

It will revert you back to the the last non-beta version, so in this case it would be 10.25
