2.3 -> 2.4 update report

The proble3m is that no matter how similar the systems are, there is no way they will be identical and, for some, there is SOMETHING that interferes with P3D.

My point is, until you find that SOMETHING, P3D will not work for you. I accept that and work at finding those glitches that affect P3D. Removing them one by one results in a great flight experience.

Given that I was a programmer and probably know my way around the innards of a system better than many simmers so that helps but don't give up, the reward is worth it.

You're right Vic. I always think simming, whether FSX or P3D is a little like eating food. You can eat one kind of food and be OK and eat another kind of food and be OK, but eat the two together and you get indigestion!! Have you ever tried to figure out what two foods interact to give you indigestion!

LOL!  Point taken Howard!

I've just scanned through his thread and some others here, and have several questions, It sounds like ASN and the Addon Manager have been updated for v2.4. If I use the P3D upgrade method recommended by Rob, and modified by Mitch (full install but use the residual file structure from the praior version after uninstall):

I see references here to EZCA causing crashes (is that correct?),

FTN750 not working (is that correct?),

and that there is no upversion yet for FSUIPC, and the existing version causres crashes (is that correct?)

Thanks, Bruce

ASEL, Instrument.

KBJC, Colorado.

My P3D updated to 2.4 just fine thanks to Rob's instructions.  That being said, OOM's continue to be quite the buzz kill ever since 2.3... it is not fixed and is getting quite frustrating.

Phil Long

I'm not bothering with the 2.4 update after the less than enthusiastic reviews on it, infact with FSX dx10 fixer and fiber accelerator i am undecided which is the better sim.

I get a smoother running sim with FSX but more eye candy with p3dv2.3,  to be honest its a bit fustrating to see so called improvements to simming and then be underwhelmed when they are installed, global 1.30 is the latest I can't spot the difference improvement.

FSX or P3d....it depends on my mood, there really isnt much difference if we are honest,

With all respect but this isn't really true - if you're honest. Anyway you can use whatever you think it's best for you.

Spirit

After installing Aerosoft A319  In P3D, I had  to turn off vsync to improve stutters and improve FPS which makes P3D less appealing , in FSX I have lower FPS but a smoother sim with no screen tearing.

I prefer the FSX autogen look but prefer the atmospheric look of P3D, clouds appear better in FSX.

My qualitywings BAE146  is easy on frames in P3D and i won't use FSX with that.

Thats honest, my overall impression is there is not much difference when i weigh up the good and bad of both sims at the moment

Well, everybody has it's own points of view. There's only one thing that counts: Satisfaction with what one has.

I thought stock P3D autogen was identical to stock FSX autogen unless upgraded by FTX Global or GEX etc.

Ran patch after deleting the altered cloud.fx, everything seems in order, including ezca...

when sitting on the tarmac I got really beautiful cloud shadows passing over me.

Jay, I don't know for sure, if you have me in your ignore list...but in case you don't...you will see me tell you that yes, there are dynamic shadows (clouds) that pass over you in v2.3  I was sitting setting up my flight last night on Mackinac Island, and as I did, there were beautiful representations of cloud banks masking me...and then passing from the west, to the east. Yes...this feature runs fine and hot in P3D v2.3

Cheers,

Bruce, please be sure to back-up your most recent ASN Beta, that is running fine for v2.3 do not delete it...for that is the last ASN version that will run with v2.3 It is gold, because you can not download it back from the Dev site.  I suggest you save it to an USB back-up drive for safe keeping!   The last working ASN file for P3D v2.3 is B5379 you can either re-install the full download (hope you have it, or you can upgrade to that version with the B5379 upgrade patch, if you have it, and so choose.  I suggest you keep them both safe, for v2.3.

Any future version, as well as the one now for download upon the Dev site, will only work for v2.4 and beyond. If you try to run it...it will report back an as_srv error and drop to the Desktop....

Cheers,

Jay, I don't know for sure, if you have me in your ignore list

I have no reason for that so rest assured, I read your post. ;) (My ignore list is empty and I like to keep it that way.) And yes, those moving shadows are awesome. I btw already know why I didn't notice them before: at some time I had lowered the max wind speeds in ASN (because I don't like too much wind in the Cherokee) but with the Airbus I don't mind some breezzzzzzze so I removed those restrictions. Hence the clouds passing by now!

Hi Mitch

We could need some kind of benchmark with all our setups. Can you try Vancouver locked 30 and unlocked and se if you can get it relativ steady using something like the A36 or majestic DASH8 if you have it? FTX for the rest off course

Thanks Michael

Hi Michael, yes, I will do that for you shortly....and will report my FPS in that location.  I must say though..that I have been tweaking my GTX680, and with my settings I now have in place on the Precision X 16 over-clock app,  I have gone in unlocked from 33 to 48-56 FPS in P3D v2.3.  Do you want me to keep my overclock, or do you wish me to drop to as-delivered stock settings?  My card is an EVGA GTX 680 2GB Signature Plus. Let me know before the test..because that will certainly slant it, system-wise....

Regards,

Mitch

Hi Jeroen,  ok then..I wasn't sure.  Yes...at first I wondered what that was, as the ground swept dark around me...lol..I thought a CTD was coming, but nope...it came and went. It was amazing to see. I know that a lot of folks absolutely love their FSX installations, as do I...ORBX 1.30 looks fantastic, in every way, over 1.20 in that platform...and so I know that I shall keep both for all time.  Rockcliffe is missing out on some great features that just can not be duplicated for immersion, by not running alongside his FSX...any form of P3D.  I hope he reconsiders, unless system space is an issue.  Yes...there are some things that are not butter-smooth, but if you can make a mental allowance...man...dedicated-only FSX'ers..are just plain missing out. My P.O.

Cheers,

I run both, I love both.  They have different strengths, and I find it hard to just say 'one in preference over the other'.  I fire up either, depending on what I want out of that flight.  If they both had the exact-same feature set...then I think yes...you could decide to run the one that gave you the smoothest animation.  FSX on present systems does give you (N.I. support ect) better animation, but then...no cloud shadows, no cloud shadow dynamics, no killer-HDR effects, and so on.   So for myself...I don't think I can ever come to, that one is all-considerations-aside,better than the other...and come to think of it...I'll add in FS9...the all-time champ for Heavy Iron flights...  They all have great strengths, it all depends on what you wish to do in a coming flight.   At least for myself.....
