How important is the GPU, for real?

Ryan - each system is different, you know that. The amount of difference YOU see on YOUR system has no relationship to what anyone else sees.

Actually I was looking for specific P3D opinions Ie - has anyone recently switched from an older card to a newer one and noticed large fps increases?

Ok I see we're a feisty bunch around today!

I've been around the FS block just a few times there Vic.... I think I understand that each system can be different.  However in this case I'm wondering how perf changed between new and old GPU's.  If someone says they had a 50% fps increase from a 500 to 900 card it's likely I'd see some decent gain as well.

LOL. If someone said they got a 50% increase in FPS I'd raise an eyebrow. You will in all probability get an improvement as the off loading to the GPU frees up the CPU a bit but it all depends on YOUR system setup.

Not really being feisty, :) but trying to stay in perspective. Personally, I lock my frames at 22 and never worry about it. If I run unlimited, It gets in the 50-60FPS and sometimes much higher. I prefer running the sliders higher with lower but STEADY fps.

You should see a good performance boost going from a 500 to 900 series card. Your CPU may be giving some who responded concern that the boost might be limited by the CPU, since it was first released in January, 2011.

Well an entire system overhaul is planned in the next few years... my OC is slowly dying and I'm actually down to 4.0 GHz which sucks.  But the GTX 570 shows it age in other software like BF4, XP10 etc

Ya, I just bought (not received) a GTX 970 for BF3/4 because my 680 sucks on BF4, I also use very high AA in FSX (8SGSS) and I get slammed with terrible FPS when I have overcast clouds . Anyways I'm sure it will make a difference, and by the way, if you order a 970 today you might actually get it before Xmas because EVERYONE I've seen is completely out of stock.

Ryan - Have you fired up the GPU Monitor tool in Nvidia Inspector? A short test flight through the area of discontent with the monitor will tell you if you're GPU bound (utilization is generally high and touches 100% routinely) or not. If you're not, then you probably won't see much benefit from an upgrade.

Actually I haven't done exactly that... I think someone else mentioned that earlier as well. I'll check it out

LOL!!  Default mooney (not lionheart's) at a rural airport.... NI reporting 99% usage.

I agree, based on the NI graph.  I'm sorry to the other poster who mentioned it - I didn't know what you meant (I've never noticed that tiny icon before).   I also found something curious...and maybe I'm just dumb and learned something new but leaving FPS at unlimited... GPU usage is maxed.  Set to something else - not maxed.  Like in my mooney example above I can lock at 30 fps and only see 26% usage.  Quite a difference.

Then I tested where I had issues last night.  (PC12 - with dual GTN750's in the VC, LVFR KSAN / FSDT KLAX, weather) - even at 15 fps locked the monitor easily shows 97% usage... not a good thing hehe.  This explains now how my GPU is totally overwhelmed and fps probably dropped into the single digits to tell me.

Well I went from a 770 to a 970 and with the newest drivers and running @ 4k using DSR I am getting 30-35 FPS at Aerosoft Heathrow Xtreme where as on the 770 I was struggling along at 15-20 FPS. So yeah for me a big change and the 770 was still a nice card.

What res were you running with the 770?

Also I ran a test between FSX and P3D - FPS 60 locked, HDR on for P3D (with it off the usage drops about 3%)

FSX - 29% usage

P3D - 66% usage

That's pretty interesting... judging by the responses here a new GPU would make a difference

I will keep you posted So far my EVGA 570HD keeps a solid 20fps.   My upgrade will motliest coincide with the the performance i get in Star Citizen.

i have found with my 570 that Turing tessellation one notch down from max is more benefit to me than at max though at max tessellation Im only at most using %60 of my GPU power
