Still no SLI support in nvidia 344.65 ;-)

Wonder what the adoption numbers for P3D look like? Once again, this is probably something Avsim could weigh in on, at least for this community, based on forum information

Hi Mike,

yes, my thoughts exactly. This project can only exist with a powerful sponsor - or one who is very skilled at staying under the radar. As the project is so small, some low/middle management level should suffice though. I would hazard a guess that P3D sales to the enthusiasts are not even covering development costs. No big deal in a company like that - unless they fall on hard times with one of the big projects. But then you get the boot no matter if you have been successful or not.

Don't forget that P3D is not being marketed to "enthusiasts". It is being marketed as a commercial product to large and small business customers, including the military.

I say this with  no disrespect but other than a great bunch of beta testers, the flight sim enthusiasts are just a drop in the bucket in their overall scheme. I am just along for the ride while it lasts.

Now, if SLI becomes important to their commercial customers we might see stronger pressure on Nvidia.

As someone pointed out, P3D is a small part of LM's business and the "enthusiasts" are a small part of that.

Just enjoy P3D while it's here.

I've worked with LM on a number of different instances and you'd be surprised how many "enthusiasts" there are at all levels of the organization (which shows through in the commercial work they do). And from what I gather, one of the biggest customers for P3D is themselves...just a thought to ponder.

There will be many enthusiasts in Lockheed Martin but that doesn't mean they are flight sim enthusiasts.

I'm sure Lockheed Martin uses Prepar3d in its projects, but that doesn't meen their requirements are aligned with ours.

I wonder what exactly will an official profile do? Anyone knows?

I already get double FPS when the situation is not CPU limited with SLI.

Now why doesn't that surprise me? We are all human beings with proclivities for stimulation other than from remunerative work. This is something often forgotten when dealing with faceless organisations. They are mostly composed of folk like you and me with our foibles and follies, strengths and weaknesses, lofty aspirations, desires for learning, enjoyment of tangible new experiences and the pursuit of hobbies and/or sporting activities.

Prepar3D, like Microsoft Flight Simulator before it is, quite evidently, carrying the banner forward, onward and upward. For sure, it has the potential to take its place in history as the finest and greatest simulation of flight ever conceived by mankind. Gaming ephemerae will fade into memory as they are supplanted by ever more complex and colourful replacements whereas Prepar3D will endure as certainly as the enthusiasm accorded to it by all its loyal supporters.

I feel sure that NVIDIA would wish to become part of that journey, which is why I believe Prepar3D deserves any vigorous and dedicated ongoing technical support they may feel they have to offer to promote its future success.

With the present nVidia profile (which is mostly a holdover from P3d version 1.x  I'm guessing), people have been getting scaling of anywhere from nothing to ~ 25-30% with dual SLI. Given the cost of video cards, that improvement is not cost effective. Hypothetically, one could get 100% scaling with SLI, but that never happens because other factors intercede. nVidia needs to test out P3d 2.4 and decide which SLI mode works best and whether they need to set any special driver "bits" that will improve scaling. If one examines an SLI profile for a newer video game (for example, COD Advanced Warfare) with nVidia Inspector (because NI exposes some of the hidden driver settings), one can see that either nVidia or the game's authors or both have tinkered with settings in order to get the best performance possible. In most cases for the "big ticket" video games, nVidia updates the driver, which is why one sees constant releases of video drivers. Most of these updates do little or nothing to improve performance in older 3D apps.

Hi Gerry,

Yes, and my belief is based on the indisputable evidence generously granted and displayed for us by the dedicated Prepar3D Developer Team at Lockheed Martin.

C'mon Gerry, wouldn't it be much better to help us rather than indulge in constantly denigrating any posted attempts to move this forward?

I always thought it was this:

Of the same brilliant conversationalist, Mr Grantley Berkeley has recorded a

good story. ^ Walking down St James's Street, Lord Chelmsford was accosted

by a stranger, who exclaimed, " Mr Birch, I believe." " If you believe that,

sir, you'll believe anything," replied the ex-Chancellor, as he passed on.

I always thought it was this:

I've head it attributed to the Duke of Wellington.

In response to being told that the painter George Jones bore a strong resemblance to him, and that he was often mistaken for him, as quoted in My Autobiography and Reminiscences Vol. 1 (1887).

"If you believe that you will believe anything."

Either way, the words are  still very applicable here.

Gerry Howard

Hypothetically, one could get 100% scaling with SLI

That's what I was saying, in CPU limited scenarios I am able to get about 100% more frames with P3D. It may not be 100% but is certainly much more than 30-40%.

This is with a mobile CPU and GPU. Maybe these two are pretty balanced to show good results. With a good desktop GPU, 780+ class, in SLI, probably even today's fastest CPU's can't push these GPU's enough to show good results. So desktops are already CPU crippled and the SLI profile may not bring anything extra.

In essence, with good HW, SLI may not show benefits at all(?)

Has anyone seen a GPU limited scenario with something like a 780? Maybe with clouds and heavy post AA?

"one of the biggest customers is themselves"

This is not good, actually. No revenue to be made and extremely hard to justify to controlling if the going gets tough. I've been there and I feel for the project manager in charge of P3D. He/she does an amazing job!
