April 3, 201511 yr Moderator Many of you might be aware of this already but for those who aren't I've found a way of reclaiming up to 200Mb of VAS which may be the difference between getting an OOM and not. This is with the MS version of FSX.Flying FS Labs Concorde-X out of Fly Tampa Dubai the VAS available dropped down to 500-600Mb. As I flew away from the city I selected Options - Settings - Display and changed Filtering from Anisotropic to Off. Pressed OK and then went back into the menu and set it back to Anisotropic again. The net gain from this was around 200Mb. I'm enroute to HESH and available VAS is now up to 1072Mb. That's more than enough for my approach and landing. Hope it works for you. Ray (Cheshire, England). April 3, 201511 yr Thank you Ray. I have observed similar results by switching from windowed to full screen mode and back. dv Win 10 Pro || i7-8700K || 32GB || ASUS Z370-P MB || NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11Gb || 2 960 PRO 1TB, 840 EVO My Files in the AVSIM Library
April 3, 201511 yr Author Moderator Thanks SAX702. The FS Labs Concorde needs to be used in windowed mode but I'll certainly toggle it and see how much more I can reclaim. Ray (Cheshire, England). April 3, 201511 yr Commercial Member If you run Windowed Mode, you can also resize the window (even slightly) and that will accomplish the same thing. Dave Hodges System Specs: I9-13900KF, NVIDIA 4070TI, Quest 3, Multiple Displays, Lots of TERRIFIC friends, 3 cats, and a wonderfully stubborn wife.

Thanks Ray for your OP and findings and thanks SAX702 and Dave for your interesting observations. It really does seem to free up a lot of VAS during a flight and especially I like the fact that you can gain more during the approach/landing phases of your flight. I tested it in P3D and found the same increases in VAS using these methods. I flew a short route from FSDT Chicago to Taxi2Gate St Louis in ASN weather (turned out to be heavy weather at St Louis) with ProATC-X and MSEv2 photoscenery in the PMDG 737NGX. I got significant increases during the descent and landing phases as recorded in the fsuipc.log: ********* FSUIPC4, Version 4.939g by Pete Dowson ********* Reading options from "K:\Prepar3D April 3, 201511 yr Author Moderator Hi Jim, By my calculations the best increase you got was around 115Mb toggling the window state. Did you try switching anisotropic filtering off and on? I got around 200Mb increase. I'm surprised these tips haven't been more widely discussed. They're not a life saver. I still ran out of memory approaching Dubai in Concorde but at other less hungry airports it should be possible to land and park without running out of VAS. Ray (Cheshire, England). April 4, 201511 yr Hi Ray, Thanks to you and the others here for the encouraging tips. What technique / software do you use to monitor your VAS remaining. Best regards, Ken Ken Boardman
April 4, 201511 yr What technique / software do you use to monitor your VAS remaining. If you got the t7 installed than its in the introduction manual on how to monitor your vas but here is the link to see how much vas your using https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx I7-8700k,Corsair h1101 cooler ,Asus Strix Gaming Intel Z370 S11 motherboard, Corsair 32gb ramDD4,, gtx 1080ti Card, RM850 power supply Peter kelberg
April 4, 201511 yr Peter, I've been using Process Explorer for several months to spot check memory usage. But what Ray stated above gave me the impression that he was using a different technique than PE to accurately determine remaining / available VAS. Ken Ken Boardman
April 4, 201511 yr Author Moderator Hi Ray, Thanks to you and the others here for the encouraging tips. What technique / software do you use to monitor your VAS remaining. Best regards, Ken Hi Ken, Rather than monitor how much VAS I have used I'd rather see how much remains. I talked to Pete Dowson about this and he wrote a LUA plugin which monitors both remaining VAS and current frame rate. Because I use WideFS I run this utility on a separate PC in a small window. You can download it from the AvSim Library here. http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=181957 Here's what the display shows... Of course if you don't use WideFS you can monitor current VAS by logging offset 024C Type 32 within FSUIPC and output the result to the FSX Title Bar. You would then need to divide the number by 1024 to get the value in Mb. Here is a useful link on how to set it up... http://flightsimeindhoven.nl/?p=10503 Ray (Cheshire, England). April 4, 201511 yr We also have information in the AVSIM CTD Guide on how to monitor VAS and the settings required in the fsuipc utility. There's also a link to a byte converter.
