Still experimenting with clouds.

 "skyc/white_out_in_clouds" set it from 1 to 0  may cause strange problem. I had to remove it as everything became black.

Those problems happen when you do it via a lua script or so...

Everytime you start a flight , open data ref editor and change it , that worked for me.

@mtaxp

 thanks for the info. Will try once home from work.

I get the same issue via a lua script. I have to do it manually every time the sim starts.

What sort of performance are you guys getting with clouds enabled? Mine is still taking a massive hit, even on the low settings :sad:

I am using Murmur's clouds and datarefs , around 1.5-2 fps better.

Why would LR release XP with such ugly clouds* when a few 'strokes of the pen' can turn them into shapes, colours and sizes that mimic our natural environment! Congratulations Murmur and thank you for sharing the results of your research. Now if there was a way to extend the cloud coverage a bit closer to the horizon . . . although RTH** is helpful in that area.

* I know that the stock clouds are also liked.

For the joy it gives to their users discovering this hidden jewels ...  keeping XP10 alive and always a challenge...

I strongly believe there are also hidden jewels in it's FDM, and we have some users searching for them... so, maybe one day we can find, just as with did with clouds rendering, and other areas, that there is a lot more to XP10 than what we think...

I have a silly question maybe it does not concern this thread i don't know.

 What we see is just three layers of clouds in Xpx, then how did I get clouds @FL300 ?  Does it mean that one of the layers was @FL300 ?

XP10 places a cirrus layer ( NOAA plugin does it too ) under some conditions.  That's probably what you saw...

I just nuked my entire cloud setup. I'm going to start from scratch, starting with Murmur's tips.

Can you try the following ? (in the written order)

1) Replace default cloud textures with these lower res dds textures:

cloud textures.zip

2) Set cloud detail in X-Plane rendering settings to minimum (10%)

2) With "datarefeditor", set "clouds/first_res_3d" from 0 to 2

3) Set a scattered or broken or overcast cloud layer.

What fps do you get (and also compared to clear sky)? You won't get nice clouds for now, but it's just a starting point to check your potential fps with clouds;

I get much better fps (compared to default cloud settings) using my modified settings. :smile:

I think you are right it did look like a cirrus layer.

Same cpu but I have a more powerful AMD 6650M 2GB. I use 1366x768 though, at higher resolutions, X-Plane fps are too low for my tastes.

That 2GB does make a difference, I think your card has similar clocks to the GT525m but has more shaders.

Can't wait to get a decent system for Xpx
