A tip for NVidia users

Rather than post in the Tips section I thought I'd add this here until we've achieved consensus.

Outstanding.  This process was part of a troubleshooting scenario I did this past weekend.  I actually found the solution from another site about disabling the GPU sound drivers and it definitely was an improvement.

To add to your post, I also found (courtesy of AVSIMers), that disabling HDR lighting in P3D V3 and running DSR through the nVidia control panel, actually improved the look in P3D and provided a little smoother flight.

Interesting. But if DSR is related to resolution and HDR to lighting, how can one be used to replace the other? Genuine question

As I stated, it came from a posting here at AVSIM so I tried it and found that the look of the sim was just as good, without having HDR on and costing me frames.

Cool. I'll try that.

There is no relation at all... so they can't replace each other. Apparently Jim simply likes the look of P3D with HDR off more than with HDR on and, completely apart from that, he also likes that specific kind of AA. I have to add that I am a bit amazed that this actually resulted in smoother performance on his PC.

Horses for courses, as they say...

After a search, I found the thread here ( i was mistaken that it came from this site):  http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/100979-in-the-land-of-my-fathers/page-2

Post #27, offers settings and even though it's P3D 2.5, they are good settings and the nvidia info comes in handy too.

If you read my post, I never stated it was a replacement.

Yes, they are not related, but then again, they are when it comes to performance.  The more I can dump on to the GPU the better.

What is it you are amazed about?

Great, thanks Jim

I know. I originally read your post as 'one replacing the other' as opposed to 'different but unrelated' settings.  That's what happens when one is distracted by the day job.

Great, thanks Jim

Actually, the second quote in my reply wasn't from you, so you're fine, no worries.

OK, I'll try this but I noticed that besides the two NVIDIA drivers I also have a HD audio driver - Microsoft and the Realtek HD audio driver.. What are your thoughts on the Microsoft driver (11/19/2010, v6.1.7601.17514)?

I know you didn't but Erich thought it was.  And I am amazed because DSR seems rather heavy on the system to me, less heavy than HDR. I thought that with your system turning off HDR would't make much difference but DSR would, but in a negative way, so all in all I would have expected a loss in performance. I tried DSR once but the performance hit was too big to make it worthwhile. This week I hope to test a 980Ti though so I might give this a try once more!

When I followed the link the other night, the user in that post outlined all of his settings, which I ran through with mine to see what I could turn on, off, bump up, bump down.  he was correct stating that it was a good balance.  I'm not out to achieve a real-life looking simulation, but rather as smooth of an experience as possible.  Turning off HDR did help for my system and replacing it with DSR active, pretty much leaving the settings for that alone, I was able to maintain the fps I have P3D set at, which is 50. As a test, I flew from EGCC to EGKK, not a long flight, but enough to see how my frames were impacted by also using ASN and flying the B1900 from Carenado.  The only times, my frames dipped, were at the airports, with EGCC courtesy of UK2000 and EGKK being the default (fps hovered between 32 and 50).  While flying at 8000 feet, it was just above the clouds (weather data indicated cloudy skies, which I love) so i knew this would be a good test.  I haven't reinstalled REX soft clouds yet, so the cloud textures were default.

If my setup is not the norm, or rather my settings are unorthodox compared to my hardware, so be it.  No two systems are the same, so everyone's mileage will vary of course.  She runs fine. :)

...? You CAN disable every part of the nVidia driver. I ONLY install the graphic driver and disable EVERYTHING else because I don't need and want it.

Actually I did that, and HD Audio Audio drivers installed no matter. Sigh.

Current system: ASUS PRIME Z690-P D4, Intel 12900k, 32GB RAM @ 3600mhz, Zotac RTX 3090 Trinity, M2 SSD, Oculus Quest 2.

Now that I use DSR at x4.0 I can't go back - it really brings the detail out. Doesn't seem to give me much of a performance hit as well.

Anyway back on-topic - I will definitely give this a try as a lot of stutters (even going back to FSX) seem to be related to sound being loaded.
