In case of cable failure, tailhook failure, or failure to catch a cable. Back before the angled flight deck, this would have resulted in the aircraft crashing into the barrier and possibly into parked aircraft. Looking at the video, the aircraft definitely slowed before the arresting system failure, I am surprised the pilots were able to keep the aircraft out of the water. That is some impressive flying! The linked article was quite informative as to the cause of this incident.
