June 5, 20179 yr Hi all, I have an older pc running an i7 3.07GHz overclocked at 3.9GHz with a GTX670 TI. Is it futile just upgrading my GPU to a 1070 or 1080? I'm finding my 670 having trouble keeping up... Mike Normandeau Montreal, Canada
June 5, 20179 yr I'm hovering over the cart checkout as I type. Moved across from FSX SE with DX10 fixer to P3D v4. I'm getting similar performance in terms of FPS with my GTX 970 but I can definitely push some of the sliders further right. When I say typical FPS, my ultimate stress test is coming in on short final to FSDT KLAX using FTX Global, LC and SoCal region in cloudy weather. I only have the Real Air Turbine Duke installed so far but I'm pulling about 20-25 FPS under these conditions. Not much better than FSX, if I switch the the PMDG 737 when its released I expect the FPS to be significantly less. Again not much difference from FSX performance wise. However what's really annoying is the shimmer in P3D....it's terrible unless I bump up AA to 4xSGSS which of course means my 3.5GB of VRAM is swallowed up in cloudy conditions resulting in 100% load and a stuttering mess. If I drop it back to 2xSGSS the load on my card drops off but the shimmering is terrible! In FSX with the DX10 fixer I could run 4xSGSS in heavy clouds and my video card never maxed out. I understand in P3D the GPU is worked harder so I completely understand this, So I've got my finger on the checkout cart for a 1070. Can't really afford a 1080 or higher. Will I see a significant frame rate boost? Or will I just be able to push the sliders a bit more without topping out on utilisation? EDIT: I'm running with an i7 4790k 4.4Ghz with 16GB of RAM. Of course, the best thing would be upgrading both, CPU and GPU. I'm saying this becouse i have 2700K overclocked to 4.9GHz and an 560ti, fortunately it's a 2gb Vram msi twin frozr. I overclocked my GPU for the first time yesterday and i'm getting 30fps(i have them locked at 30)in any situation now, and sim is a very, very smooth. Performance was good even before overclocking my GPU, but i had stutters. Now fps are at 30 all the time and i don't have stutters at all anymore, even in bad weather with as2016 + ASCA at payware airports. I'm surprised with my old system performance. Becouse of this i've said - i would go for a CPU first Zeljko Budovic
June 5, 20179 yr If you don't push the sliders, don't use dynamic reflections and be reasonable with your settings, you are fine. Mine is a GTX980 with 4GB and I am seeing gain of up to 50% versus V3 in the same settings and same scenario. Most importantly I don't see stutters anymore, which is a huge plus. At KSEA and ORBX PNW, I actually can use some ground traffics now and see also smooth flight. So on my modest system: i7-2700K oc 4.8 Ghz and the GTX980, P3Dv4 performs very well. I also did not touch any config files, and don't plan to for the foreseeable future. Vu Pham i7-13700K 5.2 GHz OC, 64 GB RAM, RTX5090, SSD for Sim, SSD for system. MSFS2020, XP-12, DCS
June 5, 20179 yr Commercial Member Some advice for those thinking of getting a new video card. I had a 1080 installed and then went to a 1080ti and found very little difference in performance using flight sims such as P3Dv4. If your not playing the latest cutting edge tech game (Witcher 3 or Prey) than stick with the lower priced 1080. I do play those cutting edge games as well as flight sims so my 1080ti works for me, and in fact, I am thinking of going with a more powerful 1080ti soon so I might have both a 1080 and a 1080ti for sale soon in the for "sale section" here. June 5, 20179 yr Commercial Member I was using 4k in P3D with my 1080 and the new ti made very little difference. Paul Grubich 2017 - Professional texture artist painting virtual aircraft I love. June 5, 20179 yr P3D is only a minor upgrade. But all other games in 4K are much better with the ti. And if you bump up the graphic stuff like ssaa, 16x filtering etc the ti is also much better. Especially in overcast. And yes I know you are always right and I am only a little immature boy so that was it from my side to this ;-)
