P3Dv4 - Any way to fix the water?

Featured Replies

Although I've been generally impressed with P3D so far, the water color (if you can call it that) leaves a lot to be desired.  Looking across it at an oblique angle, it's acceptable (though dark); but when looking straight down at it, it looks like a black pool of death.  Does anybody know of any tweaks that will remove the "black ink" from the water and make it look somewhat more realistic?

Wait for REX.

Then pick a theme that's lighter and has baked in animations. Because P3D's water is actually dynamic, it acts like real world water at altitude, i.e. it looks static. If you want that shimmery, FSX type effect, you need a water texture with a baked animation.

EnvTex does a slightly better job than the default with the V4 water textures. But bonchie is correct, at high altitude no matter what one does, it looks the way water does from a real aircraft at high altitude. There's very little detail, if any.

It's actually not the lack of shimmer that bothers me.  In real life, you'll really only see shimmer if you're looking at the reflection of the sun off the water.  It's the color that's all wrong... water is supposed to take on the color of the sky and my sky is not black during the day.

No.  I agree that you will see very little detail (if any) at altitude... but it is not that dark in real life when looking down at it.

My water isn't black, but that's maybe because I'm using EnvTex textures.

I may have to look into EnvTex.  Is it compatible with v4?  If you have a chance, a screenshot would be much appreciated.

Black Water by the Doobie Brothers is playing in my head now.

I have the same impression.  Reminds me of that old combat sim IL-2 Sturmovik 1946,  Those with Nvidia cards also would have black water unless a few changes were made in the .cfg file.
