The worst experience with a 4K display

Recommended Posts

I am having the worst performance with my new 4K display.  Running a GTX 1080 , i7-6700, 16gb ram. 4k 28" samsung display @ 60hz. P3D V4.2

First the larger 4k display did nothing for image quality.  To get decent quality still running at 4xMSAA.  Getting terribly low frame rates, 15-20 fps.  Outside panning, not a smooth pan, when the camera is toward the rear of the A/C get down to about 5 fps.  Very stuttery.  I'm not sure what to do?  Is it 4.2?  I have a decent system, not sure why i have such terrible performance.  I have tried 30hz, 60 hz as well as turning vsync off with no luck.  Any advice would be appreciative.  Do I go back down to a 144hz 24" display?

Awaiting the new Microsoft Flight Sim and the purchase of a new system.  Running a Chromebook for now!

4K at 60Hz is going to clobber your performance...I have a strong system including a pair of 1080Ti GPUs, and it can't get close to running 4K at 60Hz smoothly.

I run P3D into a 4K TV set to 30Hz refresh with vsync on and unlimited frames in the sim.  It's been very smooth in every version of P3Dv4 so far, and was before with a pair of 980Ti GPUs as well.  LOD, autogen, etc still matter, so revisit those settings as well.

SO you recommend at 30hz?

Yes. My system is identical to yours including monitor with the exception of ram mine is 32. FPS 30's on up.

@Shant Kahwajian

I have a similar set up, but a 55” 4K display which is much more GPU intensive. I can maintain typically 30 FPS. But yes, 30hz and vsync/unlimited frames are mandatory.

4K 60 fps is absolutely no problem if you dont fly in LAX or JFK. LAX clear skys minimum around 30 fps in approach with full autogen etc. You dont even need a GTX 1080 or something. I have a GTX 1060 and play all the time in 4K with 2x SSAA and on almost max settings in all cases. It costs not more performance like FullHD. But finally in 4k 100% of my graphic cards get used. Its a weird engine, but you have to find the sweet spot. Dynamic Lightning off! in all cases, breaks the whole performance in the sim.

Never use 30 Hz or stuff like that. Always fps on Unlimited. Limiting fps costs fps in P3D. In FSX it was worth it to limit fps here not anymore

Absolutely, yes.  I've found that the key is to run so that there is enough headroom--surplus performance capacity--that momentary spikes in workload do not drop the framerate below 30.  When I run P3D, the primary CPU core (0) is typically loaded at about 70-80%, and the GPUs, depending on weather, scenery etc are in the 40-60% range.  If the CPU *or* the GPUs get close to 100%, that's when stutters happen, because with vsync on, the refresh rate will drop to the next integer quotient,  which is 15 fps with a 30Hz hardware refresh rate--and that momentary change from 30fps to 15 fps is a pronounced visible stutter.  I watch those loads on my G13 keypad display, and if they ever get too high, I pull something back.

Or you could just get a quality 27 inch 2k monitor.  ....I would certainly take the 24 inch 144 over a 28 in. 4K.

The size of the screen plays no role at all in performance. 3840 x 2160 is the same number of pixels on every screen.

I've got a similar setup to yours except a 980TI and 40 inch 4k TV. I moved to 30 hz/unlimited frames/Vsync on and have good results. Dynamic lighting is a killer but I've learned to manage it through 2x MSAA at night and turning on only the landing lights and taxi light with the FSL A320. Maintaining 30 FPS on the ground in most situations now with occasional stutters at addon airports. Latest driver from Nvidia.

I did have bad performance similar to what you are experiencing when I first installed 4.2. Not sure what exactly caused it but I reinstalled Client, Content and Scenery, deleted my Prepar3d and cameras cfg files and my shader folder, then I was good after that.

Yes 30 Hz set on TV with unlimited and Vsync set in P3D so the frames will clip at 30. My system loves it! See my specs in the signature at the bottom.

Why does my FPS increase exponentially when minimizing my screen? For example, when P3D is in full screen I have a hard time getting good frame rates. But as I minimize the screen incrementally, my FPS increases.

Simply because you are taking the load off of the sim as it is no longer being displayed at 3840 x 2160.
