The worst experience with a 4K display

Definitely use 30 hertz.  I've a 4k monitor and for me it's a must.

Why does my FPS increase exponentially when minimizing my screen? For example, when P3D is in full screen I have a hard time getting good frame rates. But as I minimize the screen incrementally, my FPS increases.

Because 3840x2160 is a sh*tload more pixels than e.g. 2000x1000 :)

Remember: When you go from Full HD to 4K you have 4 times the pixels.

I am running a 1080ti, 6700K and a 32'' 4K monitor - no problems here.

Well, in some cases the frame rates are not good (heavy weather, in London or NY area etc.) but still ok.

What about the input lag for mouse movement etc. when at 30Hz. Very difficult to have smooth computer use. That is why I moved back to 60Hz.

The alternative is to lock at 30 fps with the Nvidia Inspector (and Vsync OFF in P3D but on Adaptive in Nvidia Inspector and with 1/2 refresh rate).

Is a compromise between smoothness and input lag for the mouse but it works decent for me.

Yes 30 Hz set on TV with unlimited and Vsync set in P3D so the frames will clip at 30. My system loves it! See my specs in the signature at the bottom.

Joe

Joe, with respect your specs don’t include one extremely important piece of info. Screen resolution. That is probably as important as CPU speed and graphics card.

Always fps on Unlimited. Limiting fps costs fps in P3D.

There is no need for FPS locked to cost FPS

But yes, 30hz and vsync/unlimited frames are mandatory.

Mandatory.? Strong statement.

Another method so your mouse is not lagging terribly at 30hz, my screen is 120hz and if I drop to 60hz it feels bad let alone 30hz.

Setting 30hz and Triple buffering/Vsync unlimited fps is a method to try and keep everything on a 30fps limit.

The other way and the way I manage FPS is similar but more reliable imo and should be less strain on your PC. If you have the head room to run 4k and keep 30fps all the time!

I keep my 120hz screen on 120hz that's why I bought it not to run it at 60hz and it will not even run as low as 30hz nor would I ever want to.

I set Triple buffering/Vsync ON but lock my fps at 25 (thats 24 really) 120hz/5 =24 (1920x1080) but with a 60hz screen unless you want to try running at 20fps you need to try and maintain 30 fps/30hz (big ask if your running an A320 with all addon running at the same time. With big airports like EGLL and at 4k ) Vic a mod on these forums running 20fps and gets the sim running smooth.

So if you sticking to 30fps/30hz I suggest try seting your fps to locked at 31. You will not see 31 within the sim you will see 30.7-30.9. I don't use Nvidia Inspector but if I did I would lock fps also in that to 30.5

As long as you add the FFTF tweak the only tweak I use you will not see any difference in how your sim runs because FFTF at 0.01 is the same as setting unlimited fps in how the sim runs, but your PC will not give anymore FPS at any time than you need thus giving your PC time to breath. Locking only incurs a fps hit if you don't add this tweak. Running unlimited you will bust your 30fps time to time and dropping to 15 is not good.

Add this under main in your config.

[MAIN]

FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.01

So you can have the benefits of locked fps with the benefits of unlimited with this tweak, so locked fps will not cost you any fps and unlimited is not mandatory. Nothing is mandatory because it seems even when people have the same spec PC's the sim can run differently, it's a strange thing but it is what it is. It's all down to finding what works for you and everyone seems to need/try different settings.

If you wish to see more in detail on FFTF watch this.

So as always within our sim world there are always more than one way to hopefully find a smooth running sim. As always what works for one does not mean it will work for another, but having as many option to use and try is always helpful.

Beside 30 Hz or fps locked at 30fps in Nvidia Inspector, I did this today (as below) and at least on my PC seems to be smoother now (less micro stuttering and more stable 30fps).

I also run 2 monitors. When you're running Vsync and have your refresh rate for the TV set at 60 Hz you are trying to sync 60 FPS or more to the 60 Hz and you can't, nor could I, maintain that by any means that's why Vsync with 30 Hz works so well because you only need 30 FPS. Also I chose to run unlimited and let it clip at 30 because I run Vsync (some people try 30 or 31 locked to help with blurries but I found unlimited better on my setup) and of course Triple Buffering On.

For the main monitor you should be able to go into Nvidia Control Panel - Change Resolution - and pick 30 Hz (assuming your TV supports 30 Hz) in the Refresh Rate Window and 3840 x 2160 (native) in the Resolution Window. I also select Use NVIDIA color settings  Desktop color depth = Highest (32 bit)  Output color depth = 8 bpc  Output color format = RGB  Output dynamic range = Full for my Samsung TV.

Absolutely. I was just about to post exactly the same! IMO, it's  a complete waste of resources to run a 4k monitor at normal viewing distances, on a desktop, with screen sizes less than 30".
