To my earlier post in this thread ...Win7 and 10 can coexist on the same computer

To be clear:  One doesn't need to abandon Win10 or for that matter do anything with what you have now --we're just adding to your system. My only suggestion was Win7 as a dedicated sim OS and Win10 for everything else.

For $250 (drive and Win7 License - if you need it) .....you'll have a sim dedicated OS that is practically married with the sim. Install Win7, make a few updates, turn off updates -forever.  Install p3D ...and if your savvy enough ... you'll be up and running in no time as all your sim stuff will already be on the slave drive you've been using.

Don't worry about email or web browsers ...not needed.  All you need is a network connection to the outside world for the sim add-ons that require it.

And!!! Intel does support Win7 on the latest main line mobo's and cpu's ...I know,  cuz I run the latest stuff on Win7, and the is backed by all the latest Intel drivers ...same driver set as Win 10 by the way. 🙂.

One other point: Prepared 4.3 will never EVER need Windows 10. If Win7 works with 4.3 today it will work with it 10 years from now.

Performing FSX/P3D tech support professionally for some time, I took exception to the initial post as well.

 

As to Windows 10, it is true that no one can point out any obvious advantage over Windows 7, except that It is a newer product. I think the point of the original post was to advise users to eliminate any extraneous causes of problems by creating an installation that is completely up to date and guaranteed P3d4 compatible right down to every last add-on. By analogy, if someone is still using either FSX or XP10, then many people will just ignore a post based on that setup. Old may not be inherently bad, but it is still old.

All true for Prepar3d V4.whatever. Not sure it will be true in a few months when P3d V5 comes out. That is the kind of thing we are thinking of when we say or guess that sooner or later Windows 10 or what ever MS calls it in the future will most likly have to be used for things like DX12 etc. There is really no argument to be won or lost here. You all make good valid points. I may not be right but I do know that a hard drive is that little thingy that sets on the computer desk with buttons and a wheel that moves the cute little arrow around the screen.🖱️

I actually find that FS 2 runs much worse now that I traded my TRS-80 in for a Tandy 1000.

Problem is the original post has errors.  Additionally, the OP's claim that using an up-to-date OS (Win 10) could help alleviate possible problems has little weight when LM themselves include Win7 SP1 within the scope of acceptable operating systems for use with P3Dv4.

To be clear...Did Windows 10 make the cut as an acceptable operating system for P3dV4. I was under the impression that it did. If so Did LM say that Win7 SP1 was the best choice and thus why you say the Ops claim has "little weight"?

Okay everyone, this worked for me. Download the program,  Lorbi-si,  AddonOrganizer P3D-v4.  The version number is 1.35.  IYou must run the program as admin.  After star start, tab over to the tab labeled, tools.  Click on encoding button.  A window will pop up with alot of files, in my case, that are not what they should be.  I closed this window and went back to first tab labeled, scenery. Click on the save button. If all is well, you will get a confirmation message.  I did this with all the tabs. At the time I still had P3Dv4.2 on my system.  I chose to install v4.3 client only, at first.  Ran the program and re activated. No problems.  So I felt very brave, and uninstalled everything, then did a complete install of v4.3.  Before running program, I ran the addon organizer once more like above.  crossed my fingers , and started v4.3.  It took probably less than a minute, but the program did start.  All is well in the world.  Somehow, the addon organizer does something with the .xml files.  Hope this works for others out there with the same problem.   Cheers    S. Who in the thread said Win 10 didn't make the cut as an acceptable operating system for P3Dv4?  Nor did anyone claim Win 7 to be "the best choice", as you wrote above.  The OP's post was certainly well meaning but his position that "older" OS's can be the cause of or compound problems in P3Dv4.3 is unsubstantiated.  As the OP noted, it is simply his opinion that Win 10 is the best choice.  The reality is that P3Dv4 will run just fine on Win 7 SP1 or above... what has yet to be noted is the importance of properly tuning the OS for best performance.  Your point above, " ...There is really no argument to be won or lost here... " can certainly be applied to the tired old "this version of Windows is better than that version" debate.

After waiting 2 years, I finally made the switch to Windows 10 from 7 Home Premium, and I could not be happier.

P3DV4 definitely runs smoother, with far fewer crashes. Overall stability of the entire computer system is better.

I did pony up the extra cash for a Win 10 Pro license, specifically so I could use the group policy editor to permanently disable automatic Windows updates. Now I can choose when to install Windows updates, and which updates to install, just as I did with Windows 7.

The single biggest advantage for me is the ability to span the desktop between my two monitors: a 4K and a standard 1980 x 1080, and have each desktop display in the monitor’s native resolution with proper scaling. That is impossible in Windows 7, and it was becoming a major source of irritation, as I prefer to run the sim on the 4K, while simultaneously running ancillary programs like Active Sky, Little NavMap etc on the other monitor. It works great in Windows 10.

I did disable Cortana and other Windows 10 features that hold no interest for me, and I chose to use Bitdefender AV instead of the default Windows Defender.

My Windows 10 experience has been 100 percent positive after many years of being a staunch Windows 7 loyalist.

The one tip I would pass on would be to install P3D outside of the Program Files folder (i.e. do not accept default location) and make sure that during installation of P3D application and all add one everything is launched as administrator.

I don't have any issues with FSX on the same drive.

At the end of the day, everyone has a theory.  I think the OP's post was made in good faith and made good sense.  Those are the rules I operate by for my own set-up and I rarely have problems.

 

I would only suggest that you create your own Prepar3D v4 addons outside of the Documents folder, as it gets filled up quite quickly. I make a copy to my E: drive where my Prepar3D v4 installation resides. My 😄 250GB SSD was getting full.
