P3Dv4.3 : my observations

Featured Replies

I am reminded how well the sim performs when stripped back to a level closely approximating a default installation.

Recently I’ve been troubleshooting a few minor issues and this entailed disabling all my Addons and everything unrelated to the default installation in the dll.xml and exe.xml files. Currently Orbx Global Base is in place and I only have the regional OpenLC entries enabled in scenery.cfg along with the three Black Marble entries, and the ORBX Libraries. Also, I have disabled my preferred Affinity Mask entry in Prepar3D.cfg. I have installed the default Sky textures from REX SkyForce 3D along with Adam’s latest PTA Preset. SODE and the FSDT Addon Manager are active as are the Black Marble Base, Vector, Bridges and Traffic installations.

In this state the performance, as one would expect, is excellent. Rather unexpectedly, previously noted stutters during takeoff at KVPS and an extended pause while approaching HURT have disappeared. My intention now is to try and identify the cause of those pauses by systematically reintroducing each item in turn. Could take a while! Meantime I’m enjoying fast sim loading times between each test 😀

The sim has remained remarkably stable throughout.

Left or right : FFTF works. A lower FFTF value increases FPS while it might introducé blurries and a higher value decreases FPS while fighting blurries.

There is no rocket science behind it.

And as long as the Sim is smooth it does not matter how internal load is spread over the cores and If there is more load on core 0 or not.

Criticism comes from people who never tried it ...

Just did the same flight again and again the framerate drop.

As I now used SLI more or less clouds and more or less shadows made no difference. GPU loads 20-40% .

Core 0 = 90-100%

Core 1 - 13 = 15-30%

I was also using Nico’ PSXseecontraffic and HD AI models . The AI textures were 2048 and I resized them to 1024. Now my custom AI folder is 13 Gb instead of 33 Gb. That helps a little with fps at the destination airport.

I want to find out the moment the framerate drop starts and afterwards. As core 0 is almost 100% all the time just looking at the cpu load won’t cover it.

A tool which might show when P3D is falling behind in unloading objects data..

All your suggestions are welcome 😊

For what it's worth

Same flight again with no AI

Compare the two

Just a thought,

At the end of the flight when fps has dropped to 17, shutting down AI Traffic will give 10 fps extra, so 27.

When starting at the same airport with AI I can see 49.

Surely this helps adding fps, but the question is what is causing the framerate drop over time  ? ...

Good call Mike.

Chaps:

When setting up the sim, AM is unimportant. For all practical purposes no AM with P3D v4 is the same as the AM of the CPU in use - four core is AM=15, four core+HT AM=255. There's no disabling of AMs in reality only the core count matters.

For all practical purposes in P3D v4 increasing core-count increases the speed with which the sim data can be loaded. We can't improve fps with an AM, but we can cause problems if we don't know what to do.

With HT enabled the only improvements possible with an AM are to decrease the available cores down to only those necessary (to provide the shortest load time), and also to eliminate second tasks from the monolithic tasks per core.

Just finished a flight from Amsterdam to Frankfurt. That is the opposite from before ( Frankfurt - Amsterdam )

The framerate drop was just just 5% compared to 60% when flying from Frankfurt to Amsterdam. The city of Frankfurt has thousends of objects and Frankfurt airport is very detailed.

Germany :

- AS Frankfurt Pro

- Orbx FTX Germany

- Frankfurt City PR + custom AG

Netherlands :

- FT Amsterdam Schiphol

- Orbx True Earth Netherlands

AI :

- PSXseeconTraffic + FSPXAI aircraft

The same scenery but flown the other way round ....

Gerard-

Isn't True Earth Netherlands ultra detailed? Could that be your variable?

I hate when people say "Oh well the sim performs perfect when stripped back to default": like OK: when is the last time you used P3D at default with no Add-ons?. Like get outta here.

You might think that.

But then, imho , I would start with low fps.

If I take off from Amsterdam and fly over the Netherlands for 30 minutes I can land with 25 fps.

When taking of from Frankfurt + FTX Germany and then try to land on Amsterdam I have lost 60% fps...

@GSalden
if you apply these settings what happens during same flight?

I don't think that was the point. The point is that loading up any sim with complex add-ons drags down performance. 4K resolution, hi res airports, detailed terrain mesh, complex aircraft, weather injectors, AI aircraft and realistic ATC turn any sim into Sisyphus.

Open architecture is like an having an open mind, it also collects a lot of extraneous stuff.

@GSalden- Just a thought... the pursuit of full fluidity has preoccupied me for a couple of decades now 🙂

@Chris Bell- will definitely check my settings next flight... something I remember from FSGS (Michael Greenblatt) days.

@SteveW- thoughts on VM Page File mate?

PS- thanks for the thread- educational

I asked Nico Kaan ( developer of PSXseeconTraffic ) about it.

He wrote to me that if he is planespotting at Schiphol ( no TrueEart Netherlands , default LC scenery ) over time the framerate drops till his Sim is getting stuttery.

His program gives a signal through Simconnect to let go of aircraft that are far out of sight. Nico thinks that letting go of the objects is not taking place or too slow.

Btw : I have read that not using a Page File might introducé issues with some programs and that a small fixed one would be better. Myself I use a 300 mb page file.

My system had 32 Gb memory 3200 MHz C15..
