who stole the plane

I did too.  Thought maybe my Google skills were lacking but glad to see someone else could not find the story.

WSJ is making the assumption that "video games" means "flight simulator"

They all seem to be making that assumption.  Most simmers would call it flight simulator and not a video game. For all we know he could have been referring to GTA, after all doesn't that include stealing aircraft?

He also could have just been paraphrasing this movie scene:

Thanks for the link. Odd that it never showed up on either a Google or Bing search though. What a tragic end to a domestic violence incident! :s_bgt:

A background is 100% useless if it does not include a look into ones health record/s for mental health issue/s and/or diagnoses.

My opinion has always been if one is diagnosed with ANY mental health illness and/or disorder that requires routine medication and follow up you do NOT get to pilot an aircraft or own any firearm/s. No exceptions. Zero tolerance.

This is the article from Sarah Needleman at the Wall Street Journal.  Is behind a paywall unfortunately, but is decent straight journalism with a basically accurate portrayal of the hobby  I talked with her a few times over the last few days, she was interested in my point of view, called me back to get clarification of different points, and while she didn't end up using any of my direct input, none of that was contrary to the points made in the article, so it's all good from my point of view.  balanced look at the hobby, if you take into account that you cannot adequately cover the totality of the flight sim world in 1000 or so words.

Is this about the Alaska incident and if so did they discover he had been seen for mental issues? Because if he was never seen or on medication than what good is a background check going to do for someone with a clean history. People loose it all the time out of the blue.

Nothing is going to be 100% foolproof but given how mental health is greatly ignored in this country it's asinine to not at least have it be part of the process. Emergency rooms across the nation are treating people in a 'revolving door process' due to mental health.

Why stop there?  I mean we should prevent anyone with thyroid, adrenal, cancer or history of cancer, pregnancy (perinatal depression/anxiety), any woman in the age range for menopause, chronic pain disorders, parasomnia, HIV, steroid/hormone treatment, and even antibiotics.  You do realize antibiotics have resulted in cases of psychosis, right?  I've even treated one.  There are no less than 200 medical problems that can present with psychiatric symptoms.  So you have effectively taken more than 50% of the population out of flying or owning firearms.
