So you have Pre-ordered. Which RTX2080 Card? Why?

Featured Replies

So I ended up ordering a 2080ti.

Not necessarily the one I wanted, but the one I was fast enough to get before the zillions of people competing with me for the card managed to hit the buy button.

I sat and watched for days, refreshing the screen, leaping to my computer every time NowInStock hit me with an availability alert, and again and again, anything over 45 seconds meant somebody beat me to it!! 😢

Finally I "won" and I have a card pre ordered. (At like 4am in the morning, after my nowinstock alert, which I had at full volume, woke up everyone within 5 miles)

Did everyone go through this? Did you get exactly the card you wanted, or only what was available, like me?

If you got the one you wanted, which one, and why did you pick that one in particular?

Finally, do you think it was all worth it?

No I'm waiting for the AIB partner cards and for the REAL benchmarks on legacy titles to come out before I decide, so I will have to wait with NDA on benchmarks till the 14th it will likely be October.

Same here. I might add the following : contrary to Intel CPUs, each new generation of cards Nvidia has so far released has proven a significant upgrade over the previous one, although each time increasing already outrageous prices. The release of the RTX series seems no different so far.

However. The proeminent feature of the new cards is ray tracing. This technology will not be mature before a couple of years, first games really using it going out maybe late 2018, Q1 2019. As for now we have absolutely no clue on the real performance of the beasts in ray tracing, and except for us simmers in 4K I bet the performance upgrade will be marginal in major sims, until PBR and ray tracing make it to our sims.

All things considered : in my opinion it is urgent that we wait for true objective reviews and for the cards to be released. The price of the hype is to high as I see it right now, and if the cards are up to expectation, I think for the use most of us will make of it we should really wait for the prices to drop a little, unless you are running P3D on a GeForce 3 Ti 200.

This should not prevent people who will gift themselves with the cards of doing so, and I have done this in the past with the 780 and the 1080 ; however the disruptive technology that ray tracing brings should be given the time it needs.

The good news is if you are prepared to wait 12-18mhts the 2080 will drop in price, the XXXXXX 7nm Nvidia GPU will be a 25-40% performance increases over the 20 series you just here Nvidia saying.

So Nvidia want to blow a $3,000+ hole in your wallet to stay on top of the game in 18mths.

7nm Nvidia only coming in 18months? Do you have any further info/links on that? Will there be more price competition from AMD and Intel GPU at that time?

I have a GTX970 now on a 3440x1440 monitor. So considering buying a medium GTX10xx second hand now and building a new 7nm rig (CPU+GPU) when the time comes.

The current rumour is that the 2080ti is 35% faster than 1080ti in 3DMark

It is only an unverified rumour indeed. Very hard to fact check. If it happens to be true it is kind of disappointing over the previous generation change, especially considering the price tag.

The reviewers have to apply to Nvidia for drivers for bench testing giving there name and contact details according to talk on the web, and an NDA on benchmarks till after 14th sept or else!!, so any benchmarks out will get the or else?.

And there will be no shortage of the 10 series cards Nvidia have told the AIB partners they make carry on take the oversupplied chips due to the drop in miners.

$1170 USD for a video card?  I guess that's the price of being on the bleeding edge, but it's way too much for me.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

I'll be getting the $499 RTX 2070 when that comes out.  I'm coming from a GTX 970 so should see a significant performance increase. This gives me the best bang for the buck.

Did you sold a liver to buy it? 😀 counting on a review from you to see how it behaves compared to the 1080ti!

Nah...... In fact I was dithering about getting one, but then my competitive juices got stirred up by the fact that anytime I even tried to put one in my cart, it came up as sold out, even if it had just become available within the last few seconds. I suspected there were scalpers out there using some sort of automated purchasing macros. Worse, those cards were showing up within less than half an hour on Ebay, (which word not allowed) me off.

Suddenly, I went from dithering, to absolutely determined to get one, even if bad reviews or other info causes me to cancel the preorder later. 😻

I'm sure all of us who actually keep our cards will be happy to share our numbers and findings!

I think that's why the 2080 Ti came out so quick than releasing a year later.

Don't get me wrong I'm not anti Nvidia I just want to see the benchmarks, as I'm not going to be buying RT or DLSS games in the future I'm only interested in what it will do for P3Dv4 so I can wait.
