FSX Water

Featured Replies

Hi:Is the water(not waves on coast) in FSX animated or is it just like in FS2004? Also, is the water 2D or 3D?Thanks!Fausto

It's flat, but is animated and looks excellent. It reflects all of the objects above it realistically.James

>is the water 2D or 3D?No, you won't be able to dive underwater and swim with dolphins so I guess it is 2D.Michael J.

It's a 2d plane, dx10 could allow for 'some wave action' though. ;)Regarding fs2004, I think the water is animated, not as good as fsx but there is some movement.

I haven't seen them in the demo. I wondered about them but assume they were removed and the new animations added. They always looked a little hoaky to me. The new wave animations, without coastline waves, are much better (IMHO).Randall

Interesting Q.Actually no. There are no breaking waves..at least not in the demo. There is no animation like wake or a surge. No such thing.But... there is a sense of animation.1. When flying high, at a distance you see the water shimmering...2. when you look down, its very realistic..there are these white waves (very small) that keeps appearing and then slowly dissappearing. Thats exactly how it is..when flying and looking down at the ocean from say.. 7000-10000 feet altitude.3. When very low, say 2 or 3 feet above, you see shadows which move..that gives an appearence of wake. An appearence of water movement. This water is a 1000 times improvement over the earlier version. IMO.Its difficult to explain.. you got to see it.Manny

The FSX demo does not show any animated waves breaking along the coast...like in FS2004? I hope they didn't take that effect away in FSX. There is a program called OceanFX 2 for FS2004 that animates the 2D water in FS2004 and gives it a somewhat 3D effect. I forgot who created the program but I hope we can get the same effect in FSX. I like the new "photorealistic" water textures I see in the FSX demo screenshots. Also, has anyone noticed a wake behind any boats/seaplanes when moving across the water? Thanks for all of the answers.Fausto

Fausto; The water IS animated, at least when sitting still in thefloatplane gentle swells gently rock the plane. Very noticablefrom spot view as you watch the Beaver gently moving with the swells. Have seen no breaking wave action but wakes and spray from the beaver...yes. I have Perfect Water installed in FS9 and from altitude it lookspretty good.....but near and on the surface in FSX.....Well you've got to see it to believe it. Sitting in the sunlight in in the Beaver you can the see the changes in reflection, lighting and shadow produced by the planemoving with the waves.....quite incredible actually. I'm VERYimpressed. Also on takeoff you can feel and hear the effect of the swells as the floats hit them....pretty neat if you ask me. I've shot some screenies but don't know if they will show the actionI tried to capture......the float being partially submerged as the swellhits it....then being partially out of the water as the swell receeds. If they turn out ok after downsizing I'll post them in the screenshot forum. OH! One more thing this done on three year old AthlonXP3200+Ati 9600xt vid card...1gig PC3200 Mem...320W PSU...40GB5200 rpmMaxtor hard drive. So you CAN enjoy this thing without sellingyour firstborn for a new rig :-lol

I like the reflection generated when the objects are close by but not when they are far. An example would be if you are sitting in the Beaver floating a good distance off-shore. The reflect of the aircraft looks great but you can also see the reflections of the trees on shore which looks pretty strange.
