Now, in true fashion the mods should come in and lock this thread because "it has gone as far as it should go."

Hopefully an exception is made. It's quite entertaining to be honest but I also have a sense of humor. Been one or two good/funny posts here as well.

I want to see who comes up with what next??? lol

Let's all calm down. There is no need for personal attacks and they will result in a vacation.

While I do find some of the responses arrogant and abrasive, there has been no real reason to lock this thread as someone suggested.

I will repeat this comment I made earlier:

Everyone here has an opinion and theirs is no less important than yours as long as it is cordially and professionally presented.

Please bear this in mind when you post a response.

Thank you.

i'm glad you posted this. Somewhere near this frame in the trailer it shows grass which never existed in FSX.  This shot has hints of grass but I guess we are too far away for it to fade in.  In FSX this area would be represented by a landclass tile 1.2 km square and that tile would be used repeatedly in many places.

Is that what we see here?  Is that what we see here in the middle of nowhere?  In all honesty the shot is too close to the ground to tell if its part of a repeating pattern but I am hoping that with the mention of Azure Ai and satellite and aerial imagery then maybe 'dirt' and 'grass' and 'grass with trees' (and many other classifications) are done not on 1.2 km square resolution but rather 50cm per pixel resolution that is mentioned in the thread started by Arwen.

To me it feels like MS's answer to Google Flight simulator.

I don't see why they would create a hybrid sim that appears to use satellite and aerial imagery and Azure AI and the Unity engine to create part of the world and then use the old 1.2 square km landclass tile for the rest.

The SECOND time!????

Are you talking about the grass or the elephants?  The grass is better in the shot with the giraffes. What is special about the elephants is the soft body animation techniques.

Heck, I watched the video once just to make sure those were African elephants rather than Indian elephants.

There are links to videos on this site, one does a frame by frame analysis and the other is by a former Aces team member.  Both will give you considerable information.

Yeah, sorry! lol

Like I have said, the trailer didn't offer much in telling me anything about the sim beyond graphics so I didn't watch it again. I understand the trailer excited many people but for me, which I also explained, satellite imagery isn't something I want to see used in a new flight sim. For this reason, I had little interest from the sims graphics standpoint and there was no need to watch the trailer again. Another post in a topic questioning Dubai water prompted me to watch it again.

I'm gobsmacked if this has not been brought up or that it was not covered by the expert ACES team member. The elephant scene imo is one of the most critical of the entire trailer and actually shows you something. I'll comment on it but I may have to go back and watch everything again to be dead certain.

The elephant scene is the only scene that shows close ground rendering at flight speeds. Everything else we see is either satellite imagery, autogen, not at speed or is at altitude. The giraffe scene is not the same as the elephant scene. The ground scenery (grass) rendering in the giraffe scene remains sharp as it is the aircraft which has the most motion. The grass remains almost still in that scene.

In the elephant scene, the blurry green area is grass. It's the only scene that shows what MSFS may be using as modern landclass and how it may render in the game. I'm no expert on graphics of this nature. To me, it appears there are serious issues rendering this detail.

I'll really have to go back and look at it further. I was expecting someone would just give me an instant answer.

I don't understand why some are getting so heated about MSFS you don't have to buy into it if you don't want to.

Ok, just watched the trailer a 3rd time. Yes, the elephant scene is the most critical. Every other scene is carefully chosen to sell the game and show MSFS at it's best. The elephant scene looks like it kinda slipped through because they were likely too distracted in focusing on and simply wanting to show everyone the elephants themselves. The grass shows the game rendering at flight speeds and flying low. Be it if you fly a prop or are in a jet coming in to land, this is what you may see. There are many questions this raises, I would have to carefully think for a while to come up with answers.

There is a difference between heated discussion, rational discussion and simple evaluation.

Sorry Mr Mod who messaged me but you can see it is almost impossible to make mention of anything unless you let your tongue hang out and want to kiss MS's behind! lol

If this is all I can do on this forum, sorry, I have no interest and feel free to just suspend, ban or whatever.

The elephant scene in the trailer bothered me and also impressed me, in two different ways.

What bothered me was the blurriness of the ground. That's my big problem with satellite ortho-based scenery -- the big pixellated blur on the ground that makes it difficult to land a helicopter off-airport. Orbx solves this with a landclass (or maybe just "grain"?) texture overlay in their True Earth scenery, at least the two I've tried (TE Great Britain South and TE Washington). I don't see any texture on the ground in that elephant scene, just a big green blur. There is sharp grass in the Giraffe image, so what's the difference here?

What did impress me in the elephant scene was that distant mountain in the background. Way off on the horizon, just to the left of the Caravan. Maybe Kilimanjaro?

I ranted for years about how X-Plane had trouble showing distinct features like Mt. Rainier when flying around Puget Sound. They finally solved it by loading additional scenery tile data in the distance, once users had enough RAM. If the new MFS can show a mountain that far away -- or what looks that far away -- then they've solved one problem with older FS code.

And repeating what Tim Stone said about the thunderhead image in the trailer, if that volcano in the distance is just photoshopped on the skybox to make an impressive trailer, there's gonna be trouble. 🙂

The difference is speed. I think the grass in the elephant scene and giraffe scene is absolutely identical. The difference is what happens to the grass when you introduce movement/speed. The rest of the trailer hides this type of rendering situation in every scene except the elephant scene. Here it has slipped through so you get to see how things will look from your cockpit flying low. As I have stated, it's the most critical part of the trailer. Everything else just shows typical promo vid elements in ideal situations where they will present well visually. The rest of the video is just a bunch of sat data or autogen that comes with it's various pros and cons. The elephant scene shows you much more than any other part of the trailer.

The elephant scene *had* grass, but it wasn't really obvious until you got close.  Before the actual grass appeared, the ground texture was blurry.

I'm going to reserve judgement on it until I can see in in action, from the cockpit.  After all, it doesn't have to be perfect, just better than what we have.  Some places in stock FSX/P3D that wouldn't be too hard. 😄

No, it won't be perfect but we may have a new modern version of "the blurries" that FS9/FSX users have moaned about for years. The other question that immediately springs to mind, the trailer would've come from a high end machine. If you ran this on a lesser machine, what would it look like?

No, that doesn't work as an explanation because the elephants are sharp. You can even see the tusks. If it was speed from the aircraft viewpoint blurring the ground, the elephant would be blurred too.

The trees around that watering hole, or whatever it's supposed to be, are fairly sharp too. It's the ground around the elephants that's a blurry mess.
