Disturbing article

I doubt Austin has anything to worry about given the nature of most XPlane users.

His comments look like something prepared by a marketing department.  If you take it that way there's nothing wrong with them and exactly the kind of thing you would expect.

To be more precise, Laminar has no Marketing Department and so he has the tendency to play/be the Marketing Department. We are only in the stage that the marketing departments spoke, but one competitor simply has a product in the market and they have published how he wants to go on, while the other side only showed some scenes, we have no product to compare and some rather hazy comments that are not really clear at the moment.

There are only two things MSFS will be:

1. A flight game that won't replace any existing hardcore sim.

2. A modern replacement for a hardcore sim if you are prepared to sell your house to finance it.

Number one is almost the complete certainty.

Meyer, is that you?

Chill out dude, you will be able to play XP even if MFS is released.

Nope, not me, I don't even like X-Plane.

Maybe if the Pope says something about MSFS people may listen? I could also call Trump, maybe the Queen, Margot Robbie even, see if any of them care to comment on MSFS.

I'm getting the distinct impression that you already dislike anything to do with the new simulator. If that is the case, Avsim has many other forums you are welcome to participate in. I and I'm sure most others in this forum would appreciate it if you would dispense with your acrimony concerning something none of us know much about.

Ok, no probs. You have a forum here without opinions you realize this? You are allowed only one opinion. Trying to create a little balance. lol

No, this is not true, I'm simply being rational about it.

That's not true. Everyone in  this forum has an opinion, some in favor and some waiting to see. We appreciate honest opinions but snide comments are unnecessary.

Seems like modern internet journalistic technical standards have bypassed the sewer and are headed right the way down towards Earth's core. Rather ironic given they appear to be writing about a flight simulation product.

Well,

IMO it's good to read Skywatcher comments because it's an exercise for our own decision process as well as a way to get temporariliy away from my tendency to "dream" FS 2020 will be the return of all good things MS FLIGHT already brought to us in 2012.

I simply skip any comments from Austin. He demonstrated he's poor sense of humour when MS FLIGHT was released, if you can remember. I would expect better from him, but no one is perfect in this World... Austin has a niche, and X-Plane is certainly a great platform too, and will continue to evolve to even better stages, but AFAIA Concerned, it never replaced MS FLIGHT or even FSX for me...

The only aspect that I really find not too temptative for me, but that's only due to my present mood and focus regarding Flight Simulation in a PC and Aviation as a passion, is that I would really prefer not to have to make big investments in either hardware or a high speed internet connection ( still @ 20 Mbps max at home ... ), and the model that all available info suggests is that of a trully intensive cloud-based scenery resource ( ? ) Well, while I really don't know more about how it'll actually work, I at least consider that having good scenery for a limited area, like southern mainland Portugal and Spain where I fly mainly IRL would be just great! I would accept lower details for other regions of the World...

Maybe MS FLIGHT SIMULATOR comes with a "Scenery Zoom" approach, where you can populate your scenery areas according to your requirements in terms of detail. In the limit if you have an enterprise datacenter and internet access, you could expect to have "full" World coverage at max detail 🙂

OTOH, it looks like another idea I had long ago is not part of the Project for this new simulator. When I was a real fan of playing being an airline pilot, and spent money and time ( wow - I was so "squared": Money X Time = Resource2... ) in add-ons for MSFS, Aerowinx PS1 and then PSX... and dreamed about one day even being able to buy CAE Simfinity Desktop version... and that rumour that one of the major players ( CAE ) in Full Flight Simulators culd enter the PC / Game market too, that I thought a "streamed" flight dynamics and systems model" would be a great idea! The core data and calculations would run in the cloud ( by that time I didn't even consider a cloud-based approach ) and fed into local clients, driving our sim with the quality of sophisticated calculations and systems detail provided by those major players in professional full flight simulation platforms.

Having just got back from Spain, I only just read the link to that article, but anyway, here's my opinion on it...

If you knew nothing about any flight simulators at all, but were asked to write 200 words as a filler for a website to pad out their content, which they needed in five minutes' time, and having done that, you put it through Babelfish to translate it into Chinese, then into French, and then back into English, that is the article you would end up with.

I've read shirt labels which were more informative about flight simulation than that article was.

Everyone who has ever been pessimistic and focused on the negative has said the same thing.  It is no less rational to focus on the positive instead.

The positive is if they tell you MSFS will be a continuation of the franchise. A positive is if they tell you the new MSFS will carry on from what we know and love. A positive is if they tell us they are looking to take from their last incarnation and build upon it with their new. A positive is if they tell us the new MSFS will contain features never before seen in any previous simulator. A positive is if they confirm this will be a modern day replacement for FSX.

When they just tell you the focus is on this game being a "simulator," that's hardly a positive nor does it suggest it will be anything like what people here are assuming. I haven't played all the other plane games out there, Flight, FSW etc but I imagine they could all be called simulators as well. They are hardly a replacement for FSX.

This is evaluating things rationally. Taking from the word "simulator" and creating an entire fantasy world around it, this is not rational at all.

I'm just drawing one example from MS's point 1 statement, nothing else. I have looked at everything they have released so far and made evaluations from what has actually been released and stated by them. I'm not going beyond what has been stated.

Heck, you guys are discussing things that have not been stated as almost fact. They have not stated SDK as one example. They stated there will be user content. That's not SDK! lol

"User Content" could mean anything! Maybe it will have a mission builder and users can share missions. That could be "User Content."

To assume user content means SDK, to assume we will have user designed aircraft, user designed scenery and everything else mentioned here, it's based on total fantasy and nothing else.

Sorry, I'm only interested in rational discussion.
