July 27, 20196 yr Hi all, I am currently running Rex sky force 3D for my textures and ASP4 for my weather engine. i am getting dreadful performance with the Rex clouds and am considering switching to ASCA but do you guys think active Sky cloud art is better visually and performance wise than Rex? Hi, the answers are no and yes. I went back to ASCA last week because Rex EF is so weak. After a few flights I reinstalled Rex SF, because it simply has the best cloud textures and structures. So the best combination is AS + SF. Second one would be AS + ASCA + EnvTex + EnvShade. Or PTA/TomatoShade instead of EnvShade. Just my 2 cents. Kurt Edited July 27, 20196 yr by ltu6800

Isn't ASCA simply a bunch of textures whereas EF is a whole new way of Wx development within the sim? I do not have RexEF (yet) and if I am not mistaken the REX guys are working on an update to address various issues that have cropped up. For the record I do have REX SF. To the OP: I have no real issues running REX SF. Using lower res textures (512 eg) and DXT5 should be fine. The visual differences between the higher res textures and the lower ones in SF are not huge and put a lot less strain on your system's resources. July 27, 20196 yr Your "dreadful performance " is more than likely your running 4k textures. Go into setting and set to DTX5 512. Do the same if you have SF David Murden. Do the same if you have SF I wish.. i have already done this. When i run on clear skies, full traffic etc i get 50-60fps, as soon as i add live weather with clouds it drops to 20-25fps and when overcast practically unusable MSFS 2024
July 27, 20196 yr I suspect to high settings in AS, too. Cloud layers? Without sys specs its just wild guessing. Edited July 27, 20196 yr by JoeFackel System: i9 [email protected] - 32 GB RAM - Aorus 1080ti --- Sim/Addons: P3D v5 + ProSim737

Just to give you an example of how my old i7 2600K @ 4.7 & GTX 1070 FE performs with SF3D, using 2048HD clouds textures, ASP4 weather engine, & my PTA preset, DL on, and most shadows on set to medium, at FlyTampa's KTPA with 30% AI (T360 & AIG traffic) where you can just sit there and watch AI taxi and land, my fps is between 22-26 depending where I'm looking. Depending on the airplane I get down to 20 on final, but fps is not a big issue on my system. I can take off and fly around near and around massive FL thunderstorms and the sim is still smooth. ASP4, SF 3D, and PTA are a must have combo. That's just my opinion. Edited July 27, 20196 yr by DJJose MSFS

I surgest 16GB as a min. 3.0GHz using Turbo boost is not a good way to go you need a fixed OC. 4.5+ 4GB GTX is really low. All you can do, I would strip all your setting back all to the left and see whats tipping you over the edge. One of the above is maxing out or even more, than one and your PC is chocking. P3D is a hard-hitting sim to run sadly. BTW what do you mean you run traffic at 100%?, if its cars/roads, that's an fps killer, turn it off if its AI turn that right down if your using the default then turn that rubbish off also? It's not any help but my old PC does not bat an eye at EF. Edited July 27, 20196 yr by Nyxx David Murden. EF weakness (or strength) is that is that is a complex app. Maybe does not meet your profile. It also has matured through several updates. SF is a very good option, then ASCA probably. July 28, 20196 yr I have recently switched to the combo of AS4/ASCA(sky textures only/ENVTEX/REX Skyforce(without WX engine) and have found this to be a great combo. I've been loyal to Active Sky for many years and still use their weather engine, but the thunderstorm cloud models of REX Skyforce are something else. No more being able to clear every thunderstorm top in the world at FL380. There are some monster storms out there now that there's no flying over-only around. Only performance hit for me is in spot view and dynamic reflections on, but I am using a 2080ti.
