About sloped (?) runways

Featured Replies

In the night lighting post, Noooch observes that :  apart from the Courchevel scene, we didn't see any sloped runway. Courchevel could be handmade because it is famous but the rest of the airports runways didn't look sloped to me .

Well observed !

A remark first. The word sloped implies a constant angle.  Shouldn't we rather speak of an undulating runway ?

Then, I wonder whether we don't set our expectations a little high. It is really feasible to make them for some 24 000 airports as it would mean an extremely sharp mesh for all of them, the world over. Such a mesh does not exist to my knowledge.

I would at least settle for an easier way to make them. It is possible today in P3D but it is such a chore for paved runways that nobody makes them (with some exceptions like Courchevel or Lukla), including a tool like ADE.

The announce trailer appears to show subtly undulating runways at LAX in the two nighttime scenes.

Doesn‘t X-Plane have sloped runways by default? So it should be feasible.

XPlane made it possible.

I don't know if you really need that kind of extra sharp mesh, only a more generic one can do the trick. The most important thing is the runway not to be flat so each landing have to be differently handled 🙂

Yes it does, but sometimes, where the mesh data isn't good enought, you will have bumps/holes on the runways/taxiways.

Maybe the AI can help with that, smoothening the airport areas. It wouldn't lose the slopes but it would avoid abrupt changes. It wouldn't be that hard, just notice 1 guy/dev implemented it in a freeware software to X-plane (ortho4xp). In ortho4xp since the v1.30 the software smoothens the areas within airports limits. It does a pretty good job actually. Using the Azure AI, MS can accomplish an even better result to that feature.

People are forgetting that we were explicitly told it *was* possible.  The problem was that the AI couldn't handle runways with varied terrain, so they were left flat.

AI  is not the only problem.  It is indeed technically possible to make them but it is complicated if not tedious. I am speaking of paved runways. Dirt strips are not much of a problem.

Just like VR, this is one of those "its a given" kind of things. I'll eat my hat if runways aren't sloped appropriately.

I want to share your optimism, you guys. I really do 😎.

Another issue would be how much these sloped runways could adapt to a 3rd party sharper mesh without creating troughs or plateaux.

There's no sloped runways. If there were MS would have made it obvious in the clips/screenshots...  EPIC fail MS!

Do you know something more? I dont think so, EPIC fail MatthewS

Click on that pic and zoom to the left runway in front. The lights are not straight.

Wishful thinking....I'm not convinced and probably some sort of graphical artefact... Sloped runways have been are such a requested feature that if FS2020 actually had them MS would have made a big fuss about it... you know, like actually show, unequivocally, sloped runways.

I dont know about you guys, but I'm definitely going to take the word of the guy who has 0.07 "likes" per post.

Unfortunately the "truth hurts", so those who speak it are not getting many likes.

Im sure that's what it is.

The screenshot speaks for itself. Your baseless claim doesn't match what we can all see with our own eyes.

Your logic, if it can be called that, is severely flawed. By extension, Microsoft will not be including any feature it has not already explicitly, unequivocally announced. That's obviously not a reasonable position, since many features have not been announced or shown at this early Alpha stage.

But I think you know this, and just like stirring the pot.
