January 5, 200620 yr Guys,Checkout the next to last image at http://www.fsplanet.com/fsplanet_com_fsx.htmI think I'm not mistaken, do I see sloped roads??? Can this mean sloped runways??CarlitosP.S. I hope there's no problem in pointing to the image on the link above....
January 5, 200620 yr Since when has there not been sloped roads? FS5 maybe? The problems with roads has been that they are TOO sloped. Scott

January 5, 200620 yr >Over a MONTH ago there was a post made at one the blogger's>sites explaining WHY there are no "sloped runways" and WHY>there CANNOT BE "sloped runways" in FS.There was a FS2000 scenery featuring one of the French "altiports" (Courchevel) with an extremely sloping runway. There is a reference to it going to freeware in the Avsim news page of 13 July 2003, and the file is still available for download from the author's site. It may well be incompatible with later versions of FS, but it is interesting to find that talented designers can often find ways of doing the impossible!--Bryn
January 6, 200620 yr It's not that it's impossible, or even not understood. It's that for MSFT to do it for the whole world (as opposed to a few select airports) is a bit trickier. It *is* something we all want to do and to have happen...I believe X-Plane does have sloped runways.Cheers,Jason

I guess you could do a couple as an example of what can be achieved.Cheers,Chris Porter:-outta Core i7 3820 | Asus P9X79-DELUX SLI M/b | 32GB Corsair DDR3 1600Mhz RAM | DeepCool Gemmaxx CoolernVidia GTX580 1536MB GDDR3 Video | ASUS MW221u 21" WS LCD2 x Kingston V300 240gb SSD RAID for OS and FSX | 2 x Seagate Barracuda 1Tb SATA HD's in RAID | 1 x 1Tb ext b/up driveAntec P193 Case | Corsair 1000W PSU | MS Win 7 Professional 64 BitMy website and aviation photo gallery - www.christopherbporter.com
January 6, 200620 yr Maybe someone can help me out here, because I don't think I understand. Are there no payware airport addons with sloping runways? I understand what Microsoft is saying, how it would be a lot of work for the MSFT to do it, and that the resources available for such a project aren't always accurate or available, but they're talking about *every* runway, the entire world that is. I guess what I'm wondering, is it not possible for sloped runways to exist in the FS world? Jeff Jeff Commercial | Instrument | Multi-Engine Land AMD 5600X, RTX3070, 32MB RAM, 2TB SSD
January 6, 200620 yr Author >and WHY>there CANNOT BE "sloped runways" in FS.Bill,I don't believe for a second there CANNOT BE sloped runways in FS. There CAN if they do some work. As a good counter-example I landed numerous times in FS9 in a small GA aircraft on some grassy/deserty patch of dirt with a good slope to it and nothing bad happened - airplane did not sink below the ground level, etc. Actually when I was rolling to a stop going uphill - the terrain would slow me down or accelerate in the opposite direction. So it seems there is already basic physics implemented to handle movement of aircraft on a sloped terrain.Michael J.http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/pmdg_744F.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_beta_member.jpg Michael J.
January 6, 200620 yr Author >It's>that for MSFT to do it for the whole world (as opposed to a>few select airports) is a bit trickier.Exactly. Most runways are either flat or flat enough. What is needed is not relying on some digitized elevation data but Jeppesen (or other airport data) that tells you how runways are sloped. After discounting runways that are practically flat the effort could start by targeting only runays/airports where sloping makes some appreciable difference. And like Chris mentioned - this could be even better handled if MS simply provided the necessary tools - the sim community would do the rest. There are some "famous" runways with highly sloped runways (Telluride, Colorado comes to my mind) and that could be a start.Michael J.http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/pmdg_744F.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_beta_member.jpg Michael J.

You *can* land on uneven surfaces in the sim. Cheers,Jason
January 6, 200620 yr Moderator >>and WHY there CANNOT BE "sloped runways" in FS.>>Bill,>>I don't believe for a second there CANNOT BE sloped runways in>FS.I was speaking about the BASE PRODUCT... as released by the studio.Of course sloped runways are possible... I've made several for my own use. It take quite a bit of fiddling to get the geometry right in Max, but it's "doable."But, for the entire world's 20,000+ airports? Not a chance...Just for fun, I once modeled a "ski-jump runway!" ;) Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator

January 6, 200620 yr Moderator >How were the frames once it was completed, Bill...LOL.Excellent! Why would it be a frame-rate hog?Take offs were a cinch, but landings were, er... problematic. If you let your forward speed decay and didn't reach the "top," you had the experience of a reverse takeoff! ;) Fr.
