Size matters, a guessing game

Very unlikely they'll be a boxed version.

If you've got a slow connection, you'll probably just have to set aside a few weeks to get it downloaded. Then you can fly offline.

I think there will be one, at least for the consoles. The console gamers still buy the boxed versions of the games.
In the PCs, they became obsolete. I don't even have Blu-ray/DVD drives on my notebook and desktop.

If you want the kind of graphics that Microsoft are plastering across our internet screens at the moment, you will have to be online. That being the case, the base footprint size is somewhat irrelevant. Without a reasonably fast online connection, I predict disappointing results.

That's true, but the problem would still remain for those without internet.

While Xbox games do come on disks still, they very often now require massive downloads before you can actually play them.

The hard truth is, if you don't have any internet connection, you probably aren't playing any modern games at this point, much less something like MSFS with it's massive size.

I leave the disappointment or not to the eye of the beholder. The previewers that I've watched said that the game offline was still lovely.

Also there might be a big difference in streaming the whole base game and streaming the cream on top.

A 100 GB game would come with 277,778 5"1/4 floppies or  69,445  3'1/2 diskettes (a stack of about 150 m high)  if I am not mistaken.

I would be very surprised if it went on disc not something that's popular now days pirate software and resale to name two, I think like most nowadays it will be download purchase.

Piracy wouldn't be that big a deal if it came on 277,000+ disks and you needed every one to get it to install properly

There are now games requiring 150GB or more space on the disk. Personally I hope they make it as large as possible, since the quality of the offline scenery is directly dependent on that.

Read Dead Redemption 2 which is coming to PC on Nov 5th will be just that, 150GB!

And the new Call of Duty is 175GB, though it is suspected that this is due to lazy compression. Considering the contents of a flight simulator I don't think that would be an unreasonable size.

It has crossed my mind too. Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky  😃 !

You can play it with no connection after you download it somehow.

Does it mean that it will be also sold on DVD at 8.5 GB per disk ? Are we going to see the old times of the 5.25 floppies when a program could come with 10 disks  ?

I'll bet the farm it will not be sold physically in any format, including ancient DVDs. I don't own a farm, but will happily buy one so confident I would be in winning that bet.

It's case of if you can't download it, don't even bother trying to play it. You might as well stick to FSX, X-Plane, etc.

Most likely it will come on a disk for the Xbox version as store shelf sales still account for a large retail market of Xbox titles...
