Is upgrading to FSX going to cost me a wing and a leg?

Featured Replies

I have a large number of add-ons for FS2004. I am worried that if I purchase FSX, that in order to use my existing add-ons, the vendors will soon be charging for the upgrades of their products to take advantage of the additional features available in FSX. Any thoughts on what is going to happen?

I imagine whether you have to pay for add-ons to work in FSX will largely depend on how much work needs to be done to the add-on to just make it compatible, let alone take advantage of any new features.

Well I just bought a new mobo, AMD fx60, dual 7800 GTX cards, new ram. Now i am thinking about buying a direct x 10 card when they come out and maybe switching to the new P4 X6800 which means once again, new mobo and new ram. But we will see i guess. FS kills the wallet!

HiWell if PMDG is to set an example it will cost you something. As for me I waited on FS9 for a year and a half and had the patch rightaway so I`m not going to rush right out for FSX the day it`s released as I`ve proved to myself that that there is no rush for the latest and maybe greatest.Pete

Pure value for money... PMDG's 747 lb by lb... worth every penny.Manny

Y-E-SOr you could look at it like the purchase of a new car. After a few years the old one just doesn't do the job any more, and other than those fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror - almost none of the extras you bought can move to the new model.Something I've done is change my computer replacement cycle to be a few months after the release of a new version of FS.And I'll keep my FS9 setup for a while - because I'm sure that FSX won't have all the things I like for several months. But in the end I'll end up spending $5,000 or $6,000 on FSX just like FS2004.Though at least it's cheaper than my other hobbies of HO model railroads and race cars.

Any thoughts on what is going to happen? The adaption to a new version of flight simulator moves through the following stages:Denial: "No, I don't need the new version. The new version doesn't look any better. Envy: All your flight sim buddies are showing off their new toys, all the stuff they can do with the new sim.Acceptance: The new version IS better than the old one. Buying Frenzy: You'll buy the new version and then over the course of a weekend spend $3,000 on buying all the cool addons. Three weeks later you'll spend another $4,000 on a new rig. Lol. ricardfo

MannyYou have not contributed to the original poster`s question except maybe ensure that he will pay extra for FSX upgrades.I guess when folks like you continue to fall all over themselves with credit card in hand for whatever the developers decide to do we will continue to pay through the nose.As for me I`m happy with my DF A36 and the LDS767 in FS9 and will continue to be so as everyone else is breathing down the developer`s necks begging to pay for FSX upgrades. It really is amusing to see how some folks act like FS grouppies.Pete

"FS kills the wallet!"Our Flight Simulation hobby is still cheaper than a real world aviation hobby (look at all the aircraft you have in your hanger and compare them to the real world cost of those aircraft). Golf is way more expensive for example. I thought about this and it made me feel better about all the money I'll have to spend next summer getting FSX up and running...

FS2020

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR

Yeah great addon, it will be interesting to if we can run an advanced addon like PMDG 744 in FSX, without it turning in to a slideshow.

Like you I have a lot of add ons in my FS9. My solution is to keep FS9 with it's add ons. Then get FSX and whatever can be ported over and works and is free move to FSX. Whatever can't leave in FS9. In other words keep both sims. FSX will be an improvement but FS9 is still a great sim. Unlike some people might have you believe there is no need to ditch the old version when a new one comes along especially with todays high capacity hard drives. I have FS98, FS2002, FS2004, X-plane, Lock on, Micro Flight, CFS1, CFS2, CFS3, IL2, Pacific Fighters, FlyII,FSX demo, plus related add ons installed on my FS dedicated rig and have room to spare. Of those sims I use FS9 95% of the time but can always go back and fly a favorite plane from one of the other sims when I wan't to.Regards, Carlos

<>And equally amusing to see how much Manny's post agitated you.

You are just as much a groupie as anyone. As for the original post, we'll have to see how much work is involved to upgrade and whether the developer decides to charge or not....you could always not buy.Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/ambanner.jpg

radar contact will be releasing a free FSx capable upgrade to 4.3 to all registered 4.x customersjd

"Is upgrading to FSX going to cost me a wing and a leg?"An arm and two legs is more like it. Most of your payware add-ons will have a fee for the FSX upgrade (which they should for the work the developers have to do). This may be a less expensive hobby than many out there but just the same it's going to cost you more to upgrade to FSX than it cost you in the past with previous versions of Flight Simulator (inflation has nothing to do with it either)...
