December 29, 20196 yr Initially, you will have a Windows folder, and a Windows.old folder. After 7-10 days, Microsoft deletes the Windows.old folder.. Bert

December 30, 20196 yr I've upgrade from win7 to win10, while it seems works at start, I got BSOD every 10 min with that simple upgrade. I can only reinstall the win10, while all files in Cdrive are saved, but all the programs's reg. userdata. etc.etc.are losed, so it just act as a new syestem instal. While I keep that win10 on my SSD, I now still mostly use the old Win7 I've backed up....

I have confidence you'll be pleasantly surprised...you're on the ball and know what you're doing. Kind Regards, I tried the install Win10 on my older laptop. Just as a "test" run, thought I might as well. It went through its processes. Looked at first to have worked.....but now its endlessly starting up Microsoft Edge. It just keeps opening up pages and pages, 100s of incidences of the browser and crashes the laptop. So using my PC I look up the problem. And I see this has been an issue in the past. Yup I find a help topic on the problem. The problem is that all the pages start opening right at the startup and so fast that its near impossible to do the recommended fix, When I finally get the "gpedit" command typed, its wiped out by more browser pages opening and I get an error message saying there is no such command available. According to the "fix" I am supposed to find "If Microsoft Edge opens up when the laptop starts up then please perform the following steps: Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command. Type gpedit. ... On the right side, double-click the Prevent the First Run webpage from opening on Microsoft Edge policy." My laptop older with Win7 Home on it is totally !%%$ing hooped. that's FUBAR; I can't do anything to reverse or fix this issue that I can see. Fortunately I have a new laptop with Win10 to use for stuff like my taxes which requires Win10 and my PC is still Win7 pro which works fine. Now I'm really concerned about updating the PC. And given that I'm heading out for living away for four months there is no way that I'm going to compromise my PC at this time, I'll have to wait until I return in the spring. December 31, 20196 yr Bryan, I assume you did this..." I STRONGLY suggest doing this system image - just in case"? If you did, just restore from your system image, and other than the wasted hours it will be as though it never happened. January 1, 20206 yr I still don’t get why you’d want to. W10 just isn’t that much better that it’s worth it.

Just to clarify, my only reason started with that I do my income taxes and those of others online each year. The software used will now only work with Win10 because of the fact that there is no more security support, like updates for vulnerabilities and such. So I would not be able to use my PC for this purpose, but everything else so far is working fine. I suspect that similar issues related to other productivity software, such as online banking, investment and stock trading financial management, email, audio video editing and movie making and various converters and compilers will soon fall into this category, so that one would need to get an update or newer updated version of the software but it might only work with WIn10. January 3, 20206 yr Hi, I just jumped in, it's all good. I don't know where all the new W10 functions are yet. Last but not least, I don't want W10 to update other programs/drivers (Nvidia and so on...) than the Windows ones, please how can I do that? January 7, 20206 yr Bryan, As far as your old laptop goes, since Windows key + R worked, then CTRL + ALT + DEL ought to work to get you to Task manager. There you should be able to end the Edge process. You might need to select Show Processes in the lower left corner to see everything. Unless of course Edge keeps opening pages over it. What happens if you hit ESC while all this is going on? When XP came out, people hated it. It was different from good old W98. Plus you needed a minimum of 128 MB of ram at a time when ram was expensive. XP is a great OS that people still use. A 1985 chevy, well taken care of, runs great. It gets you where you need to go. But it is heavy, uses a lot of gas, and doesn't have hardly any of the safety features a new car does. People hated W7 because it wasn't XP. And so it goes with every new OS. Turns out Catalina for Mac has problems. Not the least of which is that it ended 32 bit support. Whether W10 is better than W7 or not isn't the point. W10 is what MS has to offer. It's what they are developing new things for. I switched to it almost as soon as it came out. Is it perfect? Course not. No OS is. Bob i5, 16 GB ram, GTX 960, FS on SSD, Windows 10 64 bit, home built works anyway.
