P3Dv5 Excessive vRam usage

Featured Replies

When using the same settings in V5 than in V4.5 and some Addons ( True Earth series + airport ) is this possible with an 8Gb 2080 ?

And also heavy weather and using a complex aircraft ?

If 8Gb means that one has to use less detail than I might not upgrade ...

Raul (Simbol; one of the beta testers) has a 6GB GTX 980Ti, and I have not seen any comments from him regarding problems with lack of VRAM. Considering that I have exactly the same GPU, this is a key issue for me!

At least for me, with the same settings (medium/high sliders, 2xSSAA, 2048 texture size, at 4k resolution) in v4.5 I was between 4 and 8 GB VRAM usage, and in v5 it is a little higher (doesn't drop below 5.5GB even in cruise at 40k'), but causes a CTD when VRAM is saturated, which does not happen in v4.5. The CTD is the real problem, but may be related to a driver incompatibility with the Radeon RX5700XT card that is also causing a CTD on view changes.

I'd be interested if any Nvidia RTX20XX users see v5 seamlessly overflow into shared GPU memory without a crash in really demanding environments.  I might try an install on my other computer with an RTX2070S to try it...

For me this happens in the Aerosoft A330 at LVFR KMIA or KMSY which have v5 installers available. I haven't tested at the Flightbeam v5 compatible airports yet nor with ORBX stuff installed. Note that Aerosoft hasn't released a v5 installer yet so that could be related.

Edit: I guess since the OP has an Nvidia RTX card it may be a problem across GPU platforms. Anyone else with a VRAM related CTD with Nvidia cards?

Been running v5 now for 3 hrs on the 1080TI (not the 2080Ti) because I wanted to compare it to my v4 setup which I ran for a long time with the 1080TI so I now its nuances.

At 4K with most slider setting 3/4 right and texture at 60cm on both v4 and V5 I have gone from 30FPS steady (I unlocked it but that is where the the 7900X performed with the 1080Ti and the 4k Monitor) switching to V5 ( I am mostly interested in scenery in my part of the world) I have been flying over Sydney at dusk and letting it get really dark to see the lighting come on. Only in the Raptor to keep the AC out of the equation.

RTSS and Hardware info both report

V4- 2.6GBS vram being used FPS unlocked steady 31.5 FPS whilst low flying and rotating over the city and airport (YSSY)

V5 -2.9GBS Vram being used FPS unlocked steady 47FPS (as above)

Lighting, clouds way better. default Sydney airport and city is better visually that v4

I want to test soon as possible with ORBX OZ v2 but I have to say I am very impressed with the improvement in the base package. The add on packages should be able to build on that?

The water (with cloud shadows ) looks way better than v4. I don't see any issues with VRam and the performance (apples to apples) is way better.

From my perspective the next question is how good are the developers at keeping their add on software performance efficient

Back to flying, to test everything maxed out because I am happy so far. Joy I have heaps to do whilst I am locked up.

While waiting for my new PC, I checked it on my Laptop with GTX980M (just 4GB VRAM). No problem at all with ORBX Global + OrbxLC Europe + new MK Studios LEPA scenery. VRAM stays constantly at 3.8GB.

No fps gain though, with same settings I get exactly same fps as in P3Dv4.

With 8xSSAA and 4k there was nothing other to expect.

So far so good on my end. Only thing strange is that I have a 6 Gig card (and GPU-Z confirms that everything is in order) yet P3D claims I only have 5 Gig.

8xSSAA at 4k? Do you realize what are you asking your video card to do? You are asking each frame to be rendered at 4k (3,840x2,160) x 8 and then compressed again.

This is the equivalent of asking your video card to render each frame at 32k and then back to 4k.

Of course you will run out of VRAM with TrueSky and all new terrain textures.

With 4k screens you should not use SSAA. If you must, then stick to 2xSSAA or maximum 4xSSAA.

My 980ti is running fine even with a test of UTL and AIGM on it. However I don't run at 4k, I am using TrueSky sky with the maximum level of detail.

No stutters, solid FPS and stunning views.

If I switch to 4K in the future I would replace my GPU card with another that has the maximum amount of VRAM possible on it.

If I have room for only 32" size max would you recommend I move to a 4k screen as well? I also sit pretty close (40 cm) from the screen...

+1 I'll wait for most add-ons to become compatible plus any initial HFs before making the move
