Ed: Great series, going, with your IL-62, (so, you added that "Mgr" suffix this time...to clarify things a bit, at least, for me...🙂...)

As usual excellent video:

Last time, it was a "snowy" departures, this time it's "rainy", but, good-looking, all the same, and, what with those birds, on climb-out....glad, you flew past (through?) them, without incidence...🙂...

Finally, just curious, which one is your Altimeter Gauge in the cockpit shots? The gauges are marked in English (I can see, at least the numbers, with some Russian text on them), but, e.g. the Altitude, shown in the [VC], here, is in meters, not feet...Right? It always throws me off in Russian cockpits.....

Thank you Steve! Whenever I see your name I get the urge to paint something metal and shiny. 😀

The main altimeter is digital and is to the right of the HSI. It glows green when readout is in meters and orange when in feet. (At the beginning of the video it is in feet then I switch to to meters)

As both Russia and China use meters I thought I should....the charts have feet to meter conversions so it is easy.

My panel is made of photographs from the actual aircraft. It's all kilometres per hour, meters per second etc.....except the IVSI which is in feet per min. (only because I have never seen that model display otherwise.)

Hehe....I think you'd love what you can do with metal in PBR...and the real glint (not painted on anymore) of the metal as you pan around it is a sight to behold.

You can even infuse mica flakes into the paint like AA did when they switched to a "painted" metal vs their classic bare metal livery...I did it on Aerosoft's A330. 🙂

If you look closely at the pic you can see the flakes...that you only see when the sun is glinting off the fuse (or engine as well in this pic).  Painting is much more robust now with what you can do with PBR.

I'm not so sure..... So far I have seen PBR lighting up bellies of aircraft more than the top side when the sun is not underneath the aircraft. I have also seen an abundance of plastic looking engine inlets.

I am not a fan of the new AAL livery at all but absolutely love to older "metal" livery.

So as they say in Dragons Den...."I'm out"

I'll stick to my photoreal metal. 😎

Any error to metal rendering isn't really a fault of PBR but more probable the error of the painter or the paintkit provided to them.  As you can see the sun is on top the aircraft and a shadow exists beneath the aircraft, under the wings, under the engine pylons etc.

Thank you Ed for posting pictures and the video link.

--- These are very encouraging at a time when one realizes that the planned summer vacation (in the former USSR!) gets impossible and at the same time one's flightsim is plagued by scenery incompatibilities.

What Brian said! 🙂  The biggest problem is painters who mistakenly forget to remove the underbelly shadow actually painted on the old, non-PBR paint, and then just use the default metal map's green channel that also adds shadow (but dynamically as in real life)....that makes the shadow appear double dark and totally messed up.  Or they take the painted shadow off the main texture map and don't edit the green channel and most PBR kits Brain and I have noticed have way too little shadow enabled, thus leading to the condition you describe.

The proper way to do it is remove that painted on belly shadow, and adjust that PBR green channel to control how much shadow you want to use.  All you do to make it darker is increase the gradient darkness on the green channel to make it darker (Brain & I just duplicate the layer, adjust opacity, try it in the sim...and keep doing it until it looks right at every angle you view it)

6M2Itd.jpg

Speaking of plastic engine inlets....when researching GOL I noticed that they do in fact polish their inlets, so I used the Red and Alpha channels to control that....

Paw8nB.jpg

However, on ANA, they are just plain aluminum...adjusting the same channels accordingly

uGDBbE.jpg

The thing is that you can now control all that...and the best part is the reflections and sun glint is dynamically changed in the sim as the plane moves or you move your viewpoint or time of day.  It's really spectacular to see it in the sim. 🙂

By the way Brain....who painted that masterpiece?  That Everts 80 is awesome! 🙂

@Dave.....thanks Brother....a LOT of work went into getting that effect just right.

My Liveries

Ed:

[First of all, excuse me, those are raindrops on the windshield....not birds....looked just like them, to me,....but, I was mistaken...!]

And, regarding my Altimeter query, I did look at that (digital) Altimeter gauge again, wonderful orange and green glow...on it....BTW, I also liked that outer needle merrily moving along the periphery, as on an Analog dial,....(nice attention to details)...!!

Steve:

Is this below supposed to help "us" here...🙂...? Probably, better reserved, for an "advanced" course on PBR...!

"What Brian said!

Steve: All this is perfect Greek to me, personally,...🙂....but, I liked your ending the best, though:
"....and keep doing it until it looks right at every angle you view it..", Oh well, I leave it to you and Brian, then,...🙂...!

Hello Brian, of course you are right. It is down to the skill of the painter.

A bit below the belt showing me a pic of the gorgeous maddog. 😄 .....still..... park her up and lets see how the PBR behaves.

Thank you for the information Steve. You clearly have mastered PBR. The fantastic Maddog for P3D does have me green with envy.....but I'm happy to watch for the mo'. 😁

Two of the very best repainters in flight sim, no doubt about it!
