VRAM the new bottle neck

Recommended Posts

Well during the course of tuning P3D V5 I've come to the conclusion that 11GB of VRAM is not sufficient for V5.

Everything else on my system is. I am looking to maintain a frame rate of 24fps with 24hz for smoothness and I can

easily achieve that with literally all of the desirable eye candy tick and/or to the slide to the right. With that in a typical scenario

for me, If I turn Vsync off I see about 30+ fps so performance for 24fps is not a problem. But I am triming for VRAM. I've

seen it eat over 10GB of the 11GB on my Overclocked 2080ti.😭

I wonder what the maximum VRAM P3D v5 will use up with all the bells and whistles. I've heard the highest VRAM it can use it up to 13-15GB at max.

I think it will use what it can does not matter if 8 or 11 gig card just falls over if pushed too hard learning a lot with a 8 gig card and tuning for VR but getting spectacular results .hard learning curve.

If 11 Gb was not sufficient to run V5, I'd be in big trouble since my GPU only has 8Gb. As it turns out, my VRAM indicator typically shows between around 3.5GB and 5Gb most of the time, so 11Gb quite clearly is sufficient, because I haven't even go that much VRAM and my PC is doing okay.

Frankly, this sort of complaint is one we see time and time again whenever a new version of a sim comes out. People start saying 'it doesn't work' or 'it keeps crashing on my super-duper high end system with its new Sex Bombz 9000 GPU, so there's obviously a bug with it because it couldn't possibly be anything I'm doing.' And so on.

I'm going to take a wild guess here and surmise that what they really mean is they have done something along the lines of this: 'Ooh a new sim - I know, let's install absolutely every add-on I have and push every slider there is in the options pages so far over to the right that they are nearly falling off the monitor, and then let's also run it at the highest resolution I can possibly select and let's also use all that beta stuff I have as well.'

When people are surprised that this leads to crashes, I sometimes wonder if they are similarly surprised when they go outside and spot that the sky is blue.

Every sim out there which has ever come out has required a bit of restraint whenever you start throwing add-ons at it, and P3D V5 is not going to be any different in that respect, and - newsflash - the same will be true for the new MS sim as well, because if it has room to shove the kitchen sink in there, you can guarantee some third party developer will do so with their shiny new product.

You guys seem to be missing the point. You take the first sentence of my post out off context with the rest of the post.

I am saying that the limiting factor of the sim on my system with my preferences is VRAM. Is the 11GB sufficient to run V5.

Sure its is. Perhaps I could have phased it better. Anyhow, anyone who has been around this forum for a few years knows that

criticism here is rarely if ever constructive.

What settings are you useing to acheive that? I did a quick flight out of Heathrow yesterday to test the 747 release, with most sliders 80/90% to the max + ORBX England and was only hitting about 8gb of 11gb(1080ti)

I would love a 11GB.

I've seen Rob's video on YouTube where he used up around 12-13GB of VRAM. I think it was due to the fact he was using a setting in his Prepar3d.cfg file.

I am on a Titan RTX and already saw 16 GB of Vram over ORBX TE NE and almost all sliders to the right except Building casting shadows off, Simobjects c/r off, Vegetation c/r off, Autogen Draw Distance at Very High....

So getting above 15 GB VRAM is no Problem at all.

Wow 16GB. I definitely hope the new RTX 30xx cards will include more VRAM than 11GB.

It is perfectly possible with V5 and available addons to crank it up enough to overwhelm any existing hardware. This has been pretty much the same since FS9. In this instance there isn't a graphics card available yet that will handle the maximum demand that v5 + addons could ask for.

Something to look forward to as the hardware catches up

I hope the hardware side catches up to the software. It would be nice to finally run P3D at max settings with our add-ons. I've been waiting for that day to come.
