It's not required. The AI is able to build decent representations of cities that surpass anything default in any other sim by a wide margin. Go pick a random city in Africa and then compare MSFS to P3D. If you still need every little landmark in the world in every random city, then yes, you'll need to wait for some regional pack or something. That's an impossible task to have default.

But pretending this isn't a major step up isn't being honest about what they've accomplished.

This is what my city of birth in Sweden looks like in FS2020. Honestly prefer P3D. Even though that's also wildly inaccurate, at least there are textures on the ground.

Welcome to AVSIM, step!

I believe that this is where the third party developers will come into the fray: Updating towns such as Blackpool. I don't recall default FSX ever having Blackpool tower either..

Incidentally, how's Walney Island in the new sim? Have you flown across Morecambe Bay yet?

i did a route from blackpool to walney, from the air it looks good, also did a flight from cark, through the lakes, and down the coast of morecambe bay, again in the air, looks good, get close and its not that nice

I have a fully comprehensive list of 3D photogrammetic cities in the UK available on Bing and MFS:

  • Southampton

Yep, 1. Whereas Google has about 50.

Which is why I think the smart move for LM for future P3D versions would be to arrange a tie-up to Google the way MS2020 has with Bing.  There's nothing new about downloading scenery on the fly and I assume there are plenty of photogrammetry algorithms.

Except that all the airports would be blurred out in Greece (Google maps - take a look)

Ouch.. that's the worst screenshot I've seen to date. I suppose they completely miss sat imagery there. Sorry for you!

My way of thinking is this.....

If the sim uses photogrammetry all POIs will "usually" be present and be stunning

If the sim doesn't use photogrammetry the AI will model all houses, buildings etc "reasonably" good but POIs like Blackpool Tower etc will not be modelled, they are too complex for the AI to construct.  See latest official video on Bing Partnership for this detail.

However in both scenarios from altitude it still looks stunning (and believable) and the whole world is your oyster.

So until ORBX come out (or other 3rd parties) with solutions this is what we got - but its still light years ahead of other stock sims in my opinion.

What's the whole point of FS2020 when the entire ORBX loop is required again? You're kidding me.

Orbx is not required with FS2020.

You have to be kidding me if you think the stock scenery in MFS is so bland that you absolutely need to get Orbx scenery.

Anybody flown over the sea side town? Just did. Disappointing to say the least. No tower, no piers, huge hotel like structure where  the cenotaph should be. I thought this would be better than the True Earth series. Not even close.

To not have to fly in 2003 era graphics for one.

Heh...I think you are being too generous. After paying for and installing around 70 addons for P3D that deals with the graphical and scenery side of things, it all still looked like Nintendo/PS2 graphics to me. 2018 was a bad year for me cause it was my 5th re-entry into civilian flight sims after a decade long hiatus, and I ended up spending thousands of bucks only to find a year later that MSFS 2020 is coming out.
