8K cockpit shadows for 1080ti/2080ti users.

Thanks for the tip; no more vram usage at 4096 and it looks much, much better.  Thank-you!

Well this just helps settle the question...do I have enough VRAM? I guess not.

Time for a rtx3090. Lets fill that 20gb of shiny new vram with Cockpit Shadows 😄

Did you set the file as read only? If not it always resets... at least for me.

I have now. And it works now. No noticeable impact on my 2080Ti with 8192. Nice!

Just have to remember to take it off read only if I want to change anything else using the GUI... And then change it back and make it read only again. Would be nice if MS/Asobo let that slider go higher. 😉

1080ti 10GB 3440x1440 here, going to 8192 from 2048 took me from 40-44 fps to 30. Havent tried with 4096 yet.

I guess those who saw no FPS impact were already CPU bound.

The 1080ti can definitely run 8K without a hitch. Maybe reduce other GPU bound features, I'd start with render scaling.

I try 8k on my computer and noticed no performance reduction at all, but later last night I took the C-172 G-1000 for a flight from KORS at dawn and then had a huge performance loss of 20fps, when I reset the setting to 2048 everything become normal again, has anyone else experienced this?

Well it makes sense that some planes might be affected, if there are more complex shadows to draw. I had no issues yet, but I mainly fly the Airbus.

I inserted 8192 and set sharpening to 0 and whoa there was a large fps decrease but the visuals improved amazingly though. I lost at least 8-10fps but it's worth it. Went from high 30's in one spot to 30fps. Quite a hit.

If I change the shadow numbers just coming out of developer mode, it resets the default when I restart.  If I quit developer mode, then close the sim, then edit user.cfg, then restart the sim, it accepts the change.

I found out that the higher numbers do impact (GPU) FPS once the sun starts to set. Longer shadows and shadows from scenery lights I suppose take a toll here. You can take off some load of the GPU by lowering Rendering Scale or other GPU dependent feature to find a sweet spot. I am now using the 4K shadows with render scaling of 150 which allows 30FPS anywhere.

Yes, I have gone back to 4096 on my 1080Ti at 1440, scaling of 130.  Never dips below 30 fps again now.  👍

I found 8k shadows (8192) were possibly a bit too sharp anyway - possibly a bit unrealistic as I have never seen shadows this sharp in real life.  4096 seems a decent compromise, and just a bit more fuzzy on the edge and natural looking.  🙂

There seems to be two types of shadows anyway.  Even when at 8k, and with the sharp edges, I was getting the odd shadow that was a bit feathered/zig-zaggy.  Mainly the shadow from the window hatch if I recall correctly.
