I really wish I could take my pants off...

...On theย Asobo Cessna 172!ย ๐Ÿ˜

I love watching Mr. Aviation101ย (Josh Flowers) on YouTube; I have learned so much from watching his videos, and the cinematography for the places he visits is superb..ย

He has a video of how and why he removed the wheel pants when he originally bought the plane; obviously there are plusses and minuses (weight against drag etc.), which he sums up.

Someone has even done a repaint of his C172 (N80991), but the repaint has the wheel pants on, so it doesn't look quite right.

I wonder how difficult it would be to take the pants off the 3D model, similar to the C152?ย  As I think the C172 actually looks sexier with the pants off.ย  Then again, who doesn't?ย ๐Ÿ˜„

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Very difficult. Import the 3D model (loose all UV maps and animation in the process). Take off the pants (easiest part), then proceed to fully UV unwrap the entireย  model, and re-animate the whole thing.ย

Not me, I absolutely prefer wheel pants, and think the planes look much better with them. Obviously it's a personal preference...

I wish the default aircraft had this sort of customisation options, like the cargo pod on the C208B, and also propeller covers and engine plugs that only the TBM 930 has in the hangar.

It might be a good opportunity to do that when they decide to animate the aircraft doors.

Are you sure?

It's been a while since I did 3D modeling, but removing part of the mesh shouldn't require an entire UV remap, or require completely new animations. At least not in 3Ds Max.

Depends on the 3d format. The Gltf format used by Asobo is impossile to decompile without loosing tons of informations. And yes, im sure ๐Ÿ™‚

Wow okay. That doesn't sound very developer friendly at all.ย

It's just what happens with new tech. I'm sure alot of us thought the same thing when going from FS9 models to FSX.ย

Well, it doesnt bother me too much. Its their own planes after all. Theres nothing stopping anyone to develop a new plane. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh okay, so it's only Asobo's planes that are like that?

You could develop any new aircraft using any 3D model you want as long as you export it to something FS understands right? That makes more sense to me.ย

Thats exactly right. You can easily compile a model into the Gltf 3D format FS can read. But decompiling it is another story. Even your own model, when compiled into a Gltf, cannot be decompressed without loosing information. But it doesnt matter since you have the source file from your 3D program. Trouble with FS is we dont have their source files, we only have their compiled versions.ย

In snowy conditions you pretty much have to remove the wheel pants on GA aircraft with fixed gear.

What happens is if it is wet and slushy on the runway on takeoff and then on climb out the water and or slush does not blow off the brake disks so it freezes the brake pad to the discs. W/O pants they usually blow dry quickly. But with pants on they don't blow dry especially if it is below freezing on climb out as is very normal.

I once landed my Cardinal with frozen brakes in Limingtom ME. Luckily there was snow on the runway so I just skidded to a quick stop. I was lucky the snow was even and not patchy or I may have ground looped if one mainย caught traction.

The FBO sent a truck out with a heater and we got the brakes loosened up so I could taxi in. I have always removed my pants in winter from that point on.

Another winter tip is always wear clothes that you can survive in when winter flying with everything you may need in pockets (like gloves) or in a survival bag within easy reach. And wear heavy warm boots. Just in case...
