You guys crack me up trying to figure out the Universe(s) and going into all that gobblygook when all you had to do was watch this:

If you can watch all the few mins of it...goto 2:11.   When your ship suddenly reverses a few times...you know you're in trouble.

See?  Parallel Universe(s) perfectly explained by Star Trek.

This happened to me the other day...and it was my wife with a beard 😲....so I instantly knew something had gone wrong with my Ronco® Pocket-Porter (portable transporter...works on 5 AAA batteries), as there were no ION storms in the area. 🙂

I don't really buy into that millions of universes stuff.

Hugh Everett's Many Worlds Interpretation is exactly that, an interpretation. May be a correct description of how reality works ort it may not. We don't know. The same applies to the famous Copenhagen interpretation, or any interpretation of quantum physics. The problem is, quantum physics is the most successful theory we have, successful because it makes predictions and they turn out to be true to a high degree of precision. The maths works. However... it doesn't tell us anything about the true nature of reality. Its a fantastic tool, but that's all. This is why People like Shaun Carroll are studying the fundamentals of quantum physics in order to figure out what its really telling us about the nature of reality. You see, for many years, studying the fundamentals was always frowned upon. In fact there was a saying, "shut up and calculate". Meaning the maths works so use it and don't bother about why. Bonkers attitude really. Thankfully that has changed and quite a few physicists are now studying the fundamentals.

They aren't interactive are they?  If Noel picks a red shirt in the universe he's in do the millions of other Noel's also pick out a red shirt?  And what about wives?  If there are a million Noel's in a million universes is he married to the same Betty in all the others?  Can Noel die in a dozen universes and remain alive in a hundred more?

Yes, in MWI the universes are casually disconnected, so entirely separate universes to our own, with no influence on each other. So if you decide to sit in a chair, there would be an entirely separate universe where you went for a walk instead. Completely and entirely separate. Many versions of you that are separate beings in their own right. Ming boggling, I know.

Now consider another mind boggling fact... If the universe is truly infinite, then we have to consider that there's a finite number of ways atoms can arrange themselves. So if you were to travel far enough in the infinite universe, sooner or later you would find an identical Earth and an identical Noel. In fact an infinite number of them. Infinity is enough to make your head explode. And guess what? According to our best measurements, the universe "appears" to be geometrically flat, and thus infinite. 😁

Good clarification. I can see now from what I posted it could be assumed that the particles were "same". That is much different from saying that the two particles are "like". Therefore, one can exist in more than one universe simultaneously without being "same". And so that leads us to the discussion of particle-wave duality. Time for lunch..........

I am intrigued by all of this.  Can Noel die in one universe and remain alive in the next?  Are there really an infinite number of Noels who are disconnected, or do we have a common universal gene structure unique to ourselves?

I thought I would write a little story about this concept.

Captain Pritchard meet Captain Pritchard...

Captain Pritchard was lining up his F-16 on the tank at the bombing range thinking that today was his 35th birthday and he was wondering what kind of a cake Mary would be baking for him.  He felt a slight jolt.  The next thing he knew he was in his parachute watching his F-16 crash into the ground and then everything went black.

Captain Pritchard opened his eyes and realized he was in a small room.  A man was sitting across from him.  “Good afternoon Captain Pritchard, my name is Mister Blake.  You are in the coordination room.  We’re sorry about what happened.  We had a glitch in the system.  I have to leave now but I’ll be back shortly.”

Captain Pritchard sat in the room greatly puzzled.  “Where am I?” he wondered to himself.  “And who is this Blake guy?  What the (WNA) is happening here?”

Captain Pritchard’s mind was wondering as he sat alone in the small room when he heard Mister Blakes voice in the hall.  “You see, Captain Pritchard, we had a glitch in the system.  You don’t have to worry.  Everyting will be back in sync shortly.

Captain Pritchard gt up from his char and looked out into the hallway.  There was Mister Blake walking towards him with another Air Force captain in a flight suit.  He looked familiar.  As Mister Blake and the other pilot got closer Captain Pritchard realized he was looking at himself!

“Who the (WNA) are you?”

“And just who the hell are you?”

“Oh, my,” said Mister Blake.  This wasn’t supposed to happen.  You see, you are both Captain Pritchards but from different universes.  This coordination center is responsible for Sector M32.  You both, and your twenty billion counterparts, unexpectedly experienced a fatal aircraft accident.  That wasn’t supposed to happen until sometime in the future.  I’m sorry you had to meet this way.”

They reached a counter and a young woman was sitting at a control panel.

“Beatrice,” said Mister Blake, “Have you re-synced the universes in this sector?”

“Yes, Mister Blake, all but these two.  I’ll have it done in a second.”

Mister Blake looked at the two pilots and said, “Don’t worry.  You won’t remember any of this.”

Captain Pritchard was lining up his F-16 on the tank at the bombing range thinking that today was his 35th birthday and he was wondering what kind of a cake Mary would be baking for him.  He lined up on the tank and released the snake-eyes.  As he pulled up and away from the target he looked back.  “A perfect score,” He thought.  Then his mind wandered back to his birthday, Mary, and the cake.   And all is right in the universe he thought, and wondered why that thought popped into his mind.

Quite so. A refresher in particle-wave theory. Thanks. And, Noel, no, the "others" would not also be putting on red shirts. Even though two events can occur simultaneously in a muiti-universe scenario the outcomes cannot be the same.

Absolutely. The Noel's in other universes are not connected to you in any way shape or form. They are separate entities in separate universes. At some point in time, some will have died, some still alive, some architects, some male super models, some doctors, some nurses, some gay, some straight and some identical to you. Again, these are completely separate universes with beings that have no connection to you whatsoever. Furthermore, theoretically, it would be impossible for us to access those realms. They are outside our sphere of exitance. Every decision you make, would generate completely separate universes. Even one Noel deciding to inhale and one not would generate a new universe. Even microscopic biological processes would do the same. Absolutely anything that interferes with a particles wavefunction would generate an alternative universe. Schrodinger's cat would be alive in one universe and dead in another.

Think of it this way. If you balance a playing card on its edge, what happens? That's right, it topples either to the left or to the right. Well when that action occurs, in MWI, the card aurally falls both ways simultaneously. But we only inhabit this universe, so we don't see it fall in the opposite direction.

Every possibility that doesn't defy the immutable laws of physics would, in theory, exist somewhere in an alternate universe.

Do all the Noels in the parallel universes have the same birthday?  If one should die do they all die?  If one has pancreatic cancer do they all have pancreatic cancer?  If one gets married do they all get married?

I think there was a StarTrek episode about this where Picard was moving across the various universes trying to find out which one was his.

Isn't that like saying if two customers go to Target and buy identical salt shakers that the like salt shaker exists in two households simultaneously?

Depends on the type of multiverse theory you are referring to. There are 4 types.

In terms of eternal inflations infinite universes, there would be an infinite number of "Hubble Volumes". The majority of those Hubble Volumes will differ from ours, but because we are dealing with infinity, some will be identical to ours in every way.

Just how long is TREE(3)?

TREE(1) = 1

TREE(2) = 3

TREE(3) = ungodly big number.

When you have n=3 there are a lot of ways to order those branches. You get this really long chain that goes on for what seems like infinity, but we’ve proven that it ends. We also know that it is so big that we couldn’t ever expand it out in our Universe. There isn’t enough space to write it out even if we filled the Universe with sand and wrote one digit on each atom. Still, we know interesting things about TREE(3) - including that it is finite. We also know that it is WAY bigger than Graham’s number. Its in another league.

Birthday is an interesting one. If its MWI, I'm still thinking no for some of them. Because during pregnancy various biological events could accelerate or decelerate development. Thus diferent birthdays and diferent characteristics for the Noel's. However many of them will be identical at birth and thus have the same birthday. One dying does not influence the others. They are completly separate with their own lives.

No, its an undeniable fact of the universe thats maths is not fun and that a peculiar brain is required to understand it. 😆

Black boxes atop a vintage shelf
adorned with dust of opinions groan.
Oh they are overweight with burdens
quivering to shed a few genuine thoughts
but they burn in the fire of red dragon
             that engulfs snow-clad valleys somewhere
or those driven by processed thoughts
cocooned in silver foils of inclination
Insane frenzy still remains for verdicts
         declared by those deemed righteous
yet this orchard boasts of supremacy.
I've bubbled a thousand crimson ideas

My bougainvillea seeds sprout in cacophony,
I let them dance in multiverse of drops
my eyes witness dimensions in perspectives
stagnant rivers now rush to travel
as far as my mind opens rusty gates
displaced neutrons explode in a Big Bang
here's to another beginning of existence.
My mind sprays fragrance of blue roses

in the orchard of perspectives at last,
wiped dust of assumptions from black box
wrapped in banana leaves under oak tree.
I'm not free of my opinions but let them be
no longer do I succumb to frenzied wars.
I've got a song for my cuckoo to orchestrate
my tunes absorb opinionated fumes in universe
and crush them till they nourish aroma of light
that builds an abode for explorers that roam
in a luminescent entropy of ideas that flutter
around judgement but not pulled down by it
pumping superimposed energy to newborn pearls
