Trees as far as you can see

Featured Replies

I Just did a flight from KBDL to the north of the Hudson, down (south) the right side of the river then after SOL turned right to KMMU. What a flight that was and with the new 1.73, I think I will lower by LOD again to 1.2, flight was at 1.4 but trees were amazing.

I just think Sal means he has plenty of trees in the distance now, so he is where he wants to be, it's good enough for him, so he sees no point in trying newer versions.
That's the way I read it!  🙂

Ah, I think you're right. Misread it. 😉

Thanks for clarifying, thats what I mean.

For me is 1.72 ok for now.

Here are some screenshots from a flight I just did. LOD set at a 1.2 (low for me) seems great at 1.2. to me.

Judge for yourself. Might want to make full screen to see them fully.

@Nyxx where did you take those shots from?

and is there any chance you'd go to KAVL RWY34 and takeoff toward the north and take screenshots looking to the left (west).

my tree issues are in mountainous areas.  In flat areas like Florida the trees will go way out and then stop but in the mountains you see the effect of different size trees fading out at different distances until only a few trees are seen on distant mountaintops.

Just picked the sim up recently, thought I'd give this a go. I'm confused about the installation?

In the provided readme it says to install in the Community folder. I have the Steam version, so they suggest the location below if you have Steam.

"C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\SimObjects"

I don't have a Community folder in that location.

I do have a Community folder in.

"C:\Users\musko\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\Packages\Community"

I tried in the suggested location, I don't think it's working. No harm in just moving the folders around? I'm assuming the readme directions are not correct?

Edit****

Ok, I tried after moving the folder for "Trees_Distance_Draw_Fix(75-100)-SmallerTrees" to the Community folder, I have lod at 200, and I don't see trees as far as I can see at 2500ft, it doesn't look any different that default. Do I need to take the files out of the download folders, and put them in the Community folder?

Edit2****

Found some older posts, last September, where folks were having the same issue. Their community folder for the Steam install is in the same location as mine, and addons are not working if installed in that location?

@Nyxx   Thanks.   those do look good.  better than what I can do.

I wonder why making one giant never seen tree variant causes all other trees to draw farther? is it a mistake in the virtual file system?

It's because Asobo decides to make LOD tied to tree height. Makes no sense seeing as the tree height is not a normally adjustable setting in the sim like LOD is. Tree height should have nothing to do with LOD.

Got my issue above sorted out, looks great. Because it was a typical Steam install, I now have a folder on the root of the same drive with a "Community" and "Official" folder all by themselves, that the installer must have created during install. I put the tree mod in the Community folder at that location, and all is working just fine. Would be nice to somehow clean these folders up, there scattered all over the place.

Thanks, but I was looking for a deeper technical understanding of the issue.

Do you have a link to where Asobo said they tied tree height to LOD? and which LOD anyway?  It wouldn't make sense to put detailed trees way out for a user who intentionally blurred distant scenery with their settings.  and you shouldnt have trees where there shouldnt be trees.  I guess thats in the cgl files.

I had figured that larger trees would naturally be visible farther out but that doesnt explain how a non appearing tree affects the others so I was wrong.  Thats the question I was asking.  How does a non appearing tree affect the others.

An update from me.

I did a flight around Panama and saw terrible tall trees that clearly was a bug. Went to AUS west cost and again saw these horrible tall trees.

I DL the https://flightsim.to/file/5318/vegetation-draw-distance-fix

He has now updated it with 4 versions. I tested in the placers I had the horrible trees and they were gone, but what I see now is options to suit the user.

I went for his

For you to see.

Here from his read me.

Trees_Distance_Draw_Fix(75-100)
-this choice keeps the MSFS default tree sizes, and renders the trees the furthest

Trees_Distance_Draw_Fix(75-100)-SmallerTrees
-this choice reduces most of the trees by 10% (the large jungle trees reduced by 20%), and renders the trees the furthest

Trees_Distance_Draw_Fix(50-75)
-this choice keeps the MSFS default tree sizes, and renders the trees a bit shoter but there are less tree pop-ups and the trees seem to look better in my opinion. The distance is still bigger than when MSFS was released.

They are fairly similar now, with the flightsim.to version offering a lot of options, and his comparison photos are very useful, but I am still using the blog mod and happy with it. 👍
