Nvidia to slow down cards used for mining.

Featured Replies

"Graphics card-maker Nvidia says it will deliberately reduce the efficiency of its latest card by 50% when it is used to mine the crypto-currency Ethereum.

Crypto-currency enthusiasts have contributed to a shortage of graphics cards by snapping up supplies to use for non-gaming purposes.

Nvidia said it had intervened to make sure its products "end up in the hands of gamers".

But it will also sell a bespoke crypto-currency mining processor."

Exactly, I also believe it’s just a pr spin from them. Why don’t they do the same on all 30 lineup?!

Nvidia say they concentrated on Etherium because it has the biggest yield and is putting the most strain on graphics card availability.

Interesting, but in creating basically two lines of production for consumer grade cards, won't they just be spitting production capacity?  Correct me if I am wrong, but both lines will still use the same VRAM and GPU.  Cryptocurrency miners will still wage bidding wars for their line, but with half of total production going to gamers, won't gamers also wage bidding wars?

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Sounds great but....most people want the higher end cards for gaming. So, really, what does this achieve other than finally recognizing the problem? It certainly doesn't do anything to resolve the issue.

Also, and too: The fix they're talking about is driver implemented. So, basically use an old driver and problem solved for the crypto miners.

Must be a PR stunt.

As with all bubbles, this one will pass, too. Non miners who are willing to pay these exhorbitant prices must have money to throw away.

Nope... its not just the driver.

Cheap PC parts could be a thing of the past AMD apparently no better off vapourware.

If this is the trend then 4090 $2,500-$3,000. PC flight sim could been very expansive in the future.

I may get a new GPU at the end of the year model number XBOX Series X and it comes with a controller for less than 3000 series GPU.

The solution is to flood the market with product, but I don't see that happening.

Nope, not possible with all the component shortages. Cryptoidiots and Covid... a bad combo.
