FREE: EGNS - Ronaldsway Airport - Isle of Man - Upgrade

EGNS - Ronaldsway Airport

Quote

This is an upgrade of EGNS Ronaldsway Airport on the Isle of Man.

If you haven't been here you jolly well should. Three things I very much enjoy are road racing, rallying and cutting that pesky tax bill. This place has all three in spades.

This wasn't tooo bad compared to other stock airports but I still felt like interfering with it. It was a wrench killing off the magnificant golden structure to the right of the terminal that looked like something Prince would've lived in, or emerged from on stage, but progress demanded it.

All the ground textures and paint have been binned and replaced. The correct taxi system with taxiways and parking spaces has been installed. Light has been smeared all over. Outlying areas such as car parks, the fire station section and weird stretches of waste ground have been filled out. The airport approach has had some rock embedded in it.

A particular highlight is the custom terminal designed by Ted Andrews. You may thank Skell300  https://flightsim.to/profile/skell300 for finding it, refining it and doing the textures to work in this. It definitely ties it up very nicely. Hopefully more custom buildings will pop along.

One thing I couldn't solve is this area's fondness for turning luminous green. It's been like that for a long time so go hassle Asobo rather than me.

One question........where on Earth is the terrain elevation mesh? The coastline looks as flat as a pancake compared to my Earth Simulations version in P3Dv4.

?

The real one is flat apparently

I was referring to the subtle variations in elevation. A top down view does not show the ground elevation at all. For example, the rock embankment around the runway 26 threshold has been "built up" from the sea to create a promontory for the extended runway and taxiway, but it looks like a flat jumble of rocks at sea level in that video. The other areas along the coastline on the southern boundary of the airport are also flat in the video, which makes them look a bit unrealistic. The real terrain has subtle changes in elevation (which are accurately modelled in the Earth Simulations version).

I assume this is because the resolution of the terrain mesh in Microsoft Flight Simulator is quite low? I would actually be curious to know what it is. Of course, it is not going to be as detailed as the ES version (which is down to 1.2m, although I usually run the simulator @ 4.8m for all locations).

The airport itself looks good.

Nice looking airport indeed, I use the boundless version in XP and this freeware looks to be on a similar level so, well done.

I see Christopher’s point about the rock embankments on the coast line  though.

I used to fly into the the Isle of Man regularly some years ago. The weather there could be awful. You’d get a low cloudbase below 1500ft and a strong wind of 30kts from the south putting the main runway 26 out of crosswind limits.

What you had to do was fly the 26 ILS down to break cloud and get visual then do a circle to land on runway 21, which you could often do by just removing the drift and the wind almost blew you onto the 21 finals.

Theres some upsloping ground on the finals to 21 and you end up getting quite low to the farmers fields before you turn in towards the airport and the ground slopes down away from you again.

Runway 21 was quite short, And had a downslope but into the headwinds it wasn’t a problem.

Try doing that following your pink fly by wire string, you can’t ! Proper flying that was, kids of today etc etc.

That was in the wonderful but noisy  HS748, not the 747 obviously😉

One reason - the airport kept falling apart on me so the main apron area had to be flattened. The rest is original and I didn't dare mess with it.

Switching between development mode and regular mode was producing a 10-20 metre height difference, giant tears in the landscape and weird invisible square plateaus with grass hovering in the air.

With the previous version people were getting all of the added elements floating in the air.

In many areas the terrain is behaving worse with every update and becoming harder to work with. There are some airports where I've had to throw away all the terraforming whereas it was fine when the sim launched.

This freeware has been there for ages and updated twice already. Old news.

Not everyone watches the update feed from flightsim.to as closely as some of us do.

Superspud does good work, and I see nothing wrong with having someone share it here occasionally so other people can enjoy it.  It's a pleasant change from the negativity that often permeates this place.

Until people drag negativity and rudeness in.  It's sad when that happens.

There's something we absolutely agree on: Superspud is doing an excellent job!.

these are mostly default buildings right, not custom made?

Yes. I'm not very good at 3d modelling. The only custom model so far is the terminal which could do with some fancier texturing but gets the job done.

I'll probably have a go at the control tower soon.
