from CTD to worse

Featured Replies

Sofar this sim has given me over 160 CTD's, but at least I could enjoy it on short flights. Today, I got the "packages out of date" message, and since then, everytime I enter the controller configuration, it says "loading"and then crashes to desktop.

Before people tell me my hardware must be wrong, I have tested MSFS on four totally different machines by now, some AMD, some Intel, with different GPU's and RAM. Still, I am plagued by these CTD's and since today, I can't even change controller settings anymore.
Without USB controllers, the CTD's happen much later in flight, and a few times the autopilot (remember no controllers) even manages to complete the flight.

Since the hardware doesn't seem to matter, I am a bit out of options as to the cause of these CTD's. I mean, if 95% of my flights end in a CTD, something must be wrong somewhere, but if it isn't my hardware...

Any suggestions?

Fear not, very soon someone will tell you on this thread that they know there is something wrong with your PC, and that is why you are having trouble.   😊

If you go in Windows Event Viewers and see the error message you get when you CTD, we could help you figure out why you have so many CTD

Purely from what you say the problem seems to come from one of the USB controllers. I know that my MFS doesn't like much when there is a loose USB connection for instance.

Isn't that exactly what happened to you Bob?

And it was put right?

Orchestra_nl - the doctor will see you now;

Now, what rig specs are you flying right now? (or not!)

Hmm.... Just my two cents to this but I had sometimes some trouble with computer and came across with this tip or advice. In device manager, in USB controllers, check every device´s properties and untick "Allow computer to save power by shutting down this device". Indeed just my two cents, probably has nothing to do with it but.... Hmm..

BTW. whatg was the name of that Nav file that was corrupted after the "Fix" that Asobo did a couple of weeks ago. I forgot the exact name of it. ?

BTW, this problem that I had at KATL this morning appears to be something wrong with that Airport. Just started a flight from KPDK which is 12 miles away with zero problem. KATL is now marked as a " No Fly Zone" on my monitor.

So what Rig are you flying now and with what peripherals?

Which 4 machines did you 'test' on?

If you had problems on 4 different machines with 4 different installations, your controller must be faulty. Or did you test with 4 different controllers too?

Turning off Aircraft AI solved my CTDs, but am suffering the 'out-of-date' issue too; for that best may be to navigate to Options -> Data, then turn back on Online options (except for AI!), save, and then, ready for this? Alt-F4 to quit FS and then fire her back up again. You may still get the 'out-of-date' issue, but you'll get a few minutes of nice photometry data! 🙂

Might be the peripheral bug issue? One solution would be delete the folders in ......./SystemAppData/wgs/ and run sim again so the sims resets. You might be up for a bit of data to download though so backup the folder first and if it works nuke the backup folder as it prolly corrupted.

So what Rig are you flying now and with what peripherals?

I am now flying on my main rig (AMD, the one below in my signature)
I used several older machines to test, amongs other things a laptop from work (HP Elitebook 830 G6) and two older homebuild rigs, both Intel.

I also did a fresh Windows installation on a seperate drive on my main rig in multiboot, to rule out software issues. There, MSFS would not even start unless I deleted the SystemAppData folder in my userprofile (users\...\Appdata\local\Packages\Microsoft...8bbwe\SystemAppData) and canceled syncing the data from my xbox profile. That led me to believe my cloud data might be corrupted somehow.

That might explains crashes during startup or going into the options menu, but I am unsure if that also could cause CTD's enroute, unless there is a random or time factor as well.

At first I blamed my AMD rig, either the USB bug that should be patched this month by AMD or a hardware issue. I was thinking of replacing the rig with a new Intel build, but tried several of my other machines. These  are near the minimum specs in one way or another, but the testresults were the same.

It doesn't matter whether I run the sim with community addons or not, or with or without simconnect clients. I even removed all commercial addons except those from Asobo/Microsoft.

I have already tried many suggestions: disabling power management for USB devices, BIOS settings like disabling PCIe 4.0 and global C-states, different Nvidia and AMD drivers. In fact, I have been troubleshooting since December, when the problems seemed to have gotten worse
In my evenlog, there are many CTD's, all of them from MSFS except for a few. When videoencoding my CPU can run for days at 100% without CTD's, I play quite a few other games without issues on the same machine. These CTD's in the eventlog go back to August, when I first used MSFS. Since December I started to fly longer flights (upgrading to a 3090 and a decent yoke had something to do with that), but that's also when these CTD's became more frequent.

Some of these crashes happen over ocean, with no airports or even land within 75 NM. Lately I have been flying in the west of USa (KCGE to KPXE). Lots of crashes on that route between RIC-CREWE-JAXSN-GSO-ADENA, most but not all around JAXSN. Sometimes I make it almost to KPXE but only without controllers, with the copilot doing the flying.
Happens with the PA44 Seminole but also with the default Beech Bonanza, with our without mods.

Tried that too. It doesn't help on my main rig, but on one of my test installations (same hardware, different drive and fresh Windows) where the sim CTD on startup it helps, but only if I also cancel syncing my settings with the cloud. If I let MSFS sync, it crashes before the sim finishes loading.

Tried that as well. MSFS did have an USB issue that were supposedly fixed. My hunch is that it was not fixed but only 'worked around'.

Okay - stop trying (word not allowed).

When you CTD - just before you do - do you get a slow down in Frames?

Or does it come out of the blue?
