My guess is that the FFTF parameter is not accessible through simConnect and the program is changing a value at a memory offset directly. The offset address will likely change with every point update.

I'm on the fence about this one. I used to run it for p4d but I can't recall it having any dramatic effect. perhaps this benefits weaker systems more.

It's not a huge investment but I'd rather not have it if it turns out to be a snake oil of sorts eventually....

is there any evidence other than users subjective impressions?

For me it's noticeable in big airports, fps and mostly smoothness when panning (I use trackIR).

I assume once airborne it's less effective.

for me its mission critical these days , with out a doubt it smoothes out the loading of scenery etc !

Slightly related question - if one wants to purchase for P3Dv4 and P3Dv5, can one just by the v5 version or does one need to pay twice?

Different versions of FFTF for different versions of P3D.

So multiple purchases required in your case, but AFAIK some sort of discount may apply.
