GPGPU specific benchmarks here https://compubench.com/result.jsp GPGPU stuff hasnt made it into consumer software yet as far as I know (unless you count crypto mining) I know the RX580 is getting older and was a bang for the buck card to begin with but it still surprises me. It is great for sims like FSX/P3D/XP11 which still pit a lot on the CPU. Not so sure about FS2020 though which seems to have shifted more workload to GPUs. I have only seen the new FS on other people's hardware. I myself use P3D/FSX and XP11. I do hope towns will be better and more correctly represented and ATC greatly improved in the XP12 release. I also hope HIFI will support it.

I feel we are on the cusp of a really 'we got kicked in the butt' with the RTM of MSFS, as regards XP and P3D. I am thrilled with what has happened in the latest P3D v5.2HF1, and am very much looking forward (and will buy for sure) the latest next V12? XP. I run MSFS of course, and enjoy that as much as one can with the up's and down's we have had roller coaster'ed with. But, we have also if one is honest with XP and P3D as well. While I see that I can run at 30 FPS (sustained) all three at present, (MSFS with SU5), I am going to cross my fingers that XP v12 (or Next Generation) will still allow me to run on a GTX 1070 card, and an older (well...gray hair) CPU at 30 FPS, or as near as it will be. I'm now retired, and simply want to get off the $1,000.00 dollar 'hits' to enjoy the hobby. At least I KNOW, that I can run all three right now, to user satisfaction, and KNOW, that my versions of XP and P3D will never change UNLESS I choose to buy the next version. With MSFS, we all know that is totally out of our control. So...with the other two of the Trifecta 'locked in'. I am good well into the future for as much time as I wish to still devote to the hobby. Simply looking most forward to see what the XP team pulls outta the hat...and I am already thinking it's NOT going to disappoint, one iota! No sir! Now, to sit in the bush, and wait for Laminar to RTM! 🙂 Edited August 1, 20214 yr by Sesquashtoo typo
August 1, 20214 yr XP12 is now my only hope... Until then, some IL-2 to fill the gap... Has there been any suggested time line for v12 (Next Generation) for an RTM touted by L.R.? Other than rumor or conjecture upon Forums?
August 1, 20214 yr Not that I know Ses... Austin mentioned he would like to have something to show for the conference in September... August 1, 20214 yr I will not be going to MSFS due to issues with Live. I don't care for the Big Brother ecosystem. Yes, I have FSX SE and Trainz but Steam doesn't title my OS and other software I use. So, XP, P3D, Flight Gear are my sims. Long as I have study level aircraft, decent ATC, weather, and vector I'm good.
August 1, 20214 yr Smart move Gary.I remember the days of early MSFS were one had to log in to enjoy a flight. No thank you!!!!I want to hop in a plane ,and be left alone. X Plane all the way HAPPY FLYING!!!!!!
August 1, 20214 yr I'm chomping at the bit for this new forestry system.I'm like wow!!!!!I notified another X Planer and told him about the upgrade. His reaction was the same as mine. I hope we see more upgrades soon.

In one of the youtube videos Austin commented "year end" then got told to take it back and edited it away. In the webex they just did: He said he wants a beta for FSEXPO.... One way or another we should at least get something of a plan for fsexpo, I wouldnt bet on completing a flight in any new major version without something serious to get mad about until at least the middle of next year. Yo'all just had first hand experience of what the first year or two of all new looks like with MSFS (cant say I didnt warn you), the early years of XP11 were basically the same - still is 5 years later if borken shadows/lighting for no good reason is something serious you get mad about. I can finally complete a flight in P3DV4.5 with GTN and ATC and maxed everything. Took an older version of my ATI software but it works. Looks darn good with UTX vector and FTX everything else. August 2, 20214 yr As a software engineer I'm quite confused over this fret regarding large amounts of 3D trees. Graphics cards can easily handle this, even smaller cards. The question is, can it be handled with a custom engine? You'll note with speedtree, almost a gold-standard in this regard, there are tech requirements such as certain engines. They have a license for $999 if you make under $1 million anually. https://store.speedtree.com/ Then there is trueSKY. Again, you can get your amazing volumetric clouds fairly "painlessly" (note how similar this tech looks to what is in MSFS2020?). But again this requires an engine that can work with these libraries. If not you are going to have to roll your own, which means the insane task of replicating what these companies have spent millions of dollars to make easier for you. https://simul.co/ With most software engineering, we build on the backs of giants, and when you have libraries that are "we just make trees awesome" or "we just make atmosphere's awesome", you'd generally want to hop on and spend your technical clout dealing with aeronautical issues, etc. Especially with a small team. The trees and bows moving in the wind....mind blowing! Does that look real life to me? Sure does! Honestly, I wish to keep my money now in my pocket....rather than around me in hardware. If I can get away with even, 25-30 FPS with the detail that I need...then I am good until the 1070 on its own, croaks. Then I will upgrade to whatever is two versions from the 'front lines'. That has always been my M.O....to wait for two versions past what interests me. $$$ wise...a sound strategy for myself. (large smile).
