Limited By Main Thread

Featured Replies

Since the hotfix, the sim has been running better than ever for me.  However, I've seen a number of posts where users mention that their CPU and GPU resources are grossly under-used and that is the same for me.  I also receive the "Limited by Main Thread" notification - on average, the sim is now using about 16% of my CPU resources and about 29% of my GPU, wasting a ton of my resource capability (and I have an older system).

Is this main thread bottleneck something that will be removed in the future?

Are you running FPS unlimited?

Do you open resorce monitor to see whats happening on all cores?

You dont say what CPU or GPU is?

easy fix:  increase your resolution to 4K@60, I bet you will never ever see only 29% GPU utilisation again, it tends to exceed 90% even on an RTX 3090 at max settings.  😀

AMD 7800X3D, Windows 11, Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard, 64GB DDR5 G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB (AMD Expo), RTX 4090,  Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB PCIe 4.0, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB PCIe 4.0, 4K resolution 50" TV @60Hz, VR: Pimax Crystal Light + HP Reverb G2 @ 90 Hz, Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant, be quiet 1000W PSU, Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black air cooler.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

You should be pleased that your system has spare capacity for those moments when it needs it.  🙂

Just try looking from side to side in dense urban scenery and watch your CPU usage shoot up.

My GPU is pegged at 99% - 100% all the time in MSFS.

But it only uses 4 out of 24 threads of my CPU.

Strange, isn't the game optimized for AMD considering the Xbox? all 20 threads are in use on my 10900k since SU5.

I did, as I did not see the point anymore.  I still keep a temperature monitor on screen, which also shows FPS, but it is really an afterthought.

I've got my FPS capped at 60 (in sim) and v-synced.  I get a constant 30 FPS almost everywhere with the current settings and all is smooth - stuttering and/or freezes are very rare.

I haven't opened resource monitor in-flight as I've been only measuring with the Dev system to make certain I'm checking sim performance.  I only run Developer mode occasionally to check the latest performance and I do not leave it running.  I'll give Resource Monitor a go in the next flight.

CPU is Intel i7-2600 @ 3.40GHz; GPU is RTX 2060 Super

My monitor is a little old 1920x1080 unit running at 60 Hz....

I am pleased - and when I look side to side (so far) I haven't had any performance issues.  Guess I'll need to check the resource monitors while doing that and see what's happening.  🙂

I never run in Developer Mode unless I'm taking a measurement.  It was my understanding that this was the only way to measure the impact of the sim itself?

Or run the XBox Game Bar, it will tell  you CPU, GPU memory and utilization in real time.

I have always used that in the past, but since moving to an HDR monitor last week, I have found that there is an annoying flicker in lighting intensity with any mouse movement when the game bar performance tab is present on the screen.

Just occurred to me as I write this, that I might be able to move the perf window to my second monitor - never thought to try that before...

You only have it up for 10 seconds at a time.. no biggie..
