Periodic stutters 5.2 HF1

I have been experiencing some periodic stutters with p3d 5.2 hf1

- full screen optimization disabled

- hight priority in task manager

-hyperthreading disabled

ASP3D + aiflow + aiground + atcapi + fsuipc (Linda)

autosave option disabled in fsuipc

simlink deleted (navigraph)

I fly mainly fslabs and pmdg. It could be after 20 minutes or sometimes after 2 hours.  I start to see periodic stutters, 1 second stutter every 3 seconds or so. (Very noticeable when panning around with FPS from 60 to 20 back to 60)
I honestly don’t understand what is causing this. Sometimes it happens after changing HDR settings or autogen density. Sometimes when opening active sky window and closing it, it could also simply be by putting p3d in the taskbar. It seems pretty random and it is hard to determine why these stutters happen.

I use a 120hz Monitor. gsynch is disabled, vsynch disabled, 60fps. (Turning on gsynch or vsynch doesn’t seem to change anything, I still get these periodic stutters from time to time)

I did not have this issue in previous p3d versions.
i reinstalled client ( deleted p3d.cfg and the shaders folder)

I overclocked my CPU  (3.9 to 5.1 10700KF) could this have an impact in terms of stutters?

Any thoughts ?
thanks!

How did you update  to v5.2 HF1 ?

i.e. Full install, Client only, Client-Content,-Scenery separately etc.

v5.2 was the best perming version for me (client update only) when I upgraded to v5.2 HF1 I was experiencing stutters during cruise and approach (along with poor autogen texture loading).

Considering I have a 9900k with all 8 cores at 5.0Ghz and a RTX3080Ti I knew something was up.

Decided to install v5.2 HF1 content as well and the performance is better than it has ever been in previous P3D v5.x versions.

In summary, ensure you have both v5.2 HF1client and content!

thanks for your advice, I actually did a full reinstall of 5.2 hf1

New update

I so strongly believe that my stutters are caused by EA ON. I just had the periodic stutters again, I installed Aicull today limiting the number of AI around my aircraft but I did not change anything. Disabling completely Ai traffic did not have an impact as well.
However, disabling Clouds + EA it took about 10 seconds for the periodic stutters to disappear.

Perhaps that new version of EA with p3d 5.2HF1 is not doing too good to my system.

Any thoughts ?

EA is still in development mode. I tried it (with HDR on) and couldn't live with the visuals but performance didn't appear to be impacted. But every system is different. Stay with EA and HDR Off for a few flights so you get a better impression.

If you want to see how many Ai are in P3D open FSUIPC and set 025C for all; 02A2 for ground-based and 02A4 for airborne.

If you have a decent GPU then I'd still recommend EA on. Latest ASP3D works great, and I discovered there's an option for high Res EA clouds in it which I'd never discovered before. EA has had a slow and chequered start, but I think it's great now (for me) and I wouldn't ever go back to legacy clouds in a zillion years.

It’s a purely subjective choice Kevin. I tried it around 3 weeks ago and after two days I’d had enough. Not for me as things stand.

I also found that P3D 5.2 HF1 if on the one hand it has improved compared to the previous ones for fps on the other hand, even if they are few, the micro stutters have certainly increased  and in my case only when I am in the area  or in landing / take-off of apt such as LSZH, EDDF, EGLL Aerosoft, KSFO Flightbeam or EHAM of FlyTampa while in flight never encountered.
One thing I did not understand why was when I had solved the problem of slow loading of textures  and their blurring which was at a much shorter distance than in previous P3Ds. Having no problems related to the hardware in use with a CPU i9-9900k 5 Ghz - Gigabyte RTX 3080 Ti 12GB - RAM 32 Gb 4000 Mhz and 2 x SSD M2 Samsung 980 PRO 1T i inserted in Prepar3D.cfg - [TERRAIN] - TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP = 10 with the consequent increase in VRAM, however, it has reached 7 GB which, however, made the loading of the O.K. on the whole scenario without blur and with stable and high fps but when I was landing in the apt mentioned about 3/4 miles from the runway or in their area, the few microstutters are became so many stutters even of seconds that practically made the situation unplayable.

A compromise was to put TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP = 9 with the consequent lower VRAM but if the blurred textures in the distance, however, always much less than the initial situation, the situation of
apt scenarios the initial one returned with the few microstutters detected.

Not thinking of blaming my hardware for this stutters difference in these apt with the use of TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP = 10 since it only happens in these apt scenarios, I have the impression that it is an incompatibility of those scenarios with P3D 5.2 HF1 unless someone certainly more experienced than me, explain to me this notable increase in stutters that occur "only" in apt scenarios, if I use TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP = 10.

Kevin, do the high res EA clouds still have that fuzziness on the edges? I would be interested to hear your thoughts on that. When I tried EA last , I ran with it for 2 days but reverted back to non EA mode as my eyes could not adapt to the blurry edges.

You can have EA on and volumetric clouds off.  The volumetric clouds are what seem to be causing a lot of problems, plus they don't look realistic.

I had the same problem, tried everything and unfortunately still stutters,
I finally changed the settings in my POWER PLAN from BALLANCE to HIGH Performance and alread two weeks I have
had no problems with the stutters, problem has been solved
  • Open Control panel and go to Power Options.
  • Then choose the High Performance plan:

@cmdn  - you can also use LM's Traffic Tools which is part of the SDK. And it is free!

Not hardware I would have thought, but use of 10 rather than 9 will increase the VRAM and background thread activity to feed those textures to the main rendering thread.  How do you have HT and any AM set up? You may possibly just be increasing the overhead on the main rendering thread with too many terrain/texture threads? In that sense, it may be a limit of the hardware capability that you could be running into, in respect of the particular settings you are using, even if not a hardware fault.

I have not spent a great deal of time evaluating this, but yes I think they do to an extent. I can't not use EA with volumetric clouds now, they are just so much more immersive for my tastes, given I have the hardware to maintain performance.

Hi kevinfirth,

thank you for your clarification.

I did a lot of testing with both HT on / off, reduced RADIUS and texture quality etc. but on those apt the situation of the stutters remained the same.

I would like to point out that instead many other scenarios such as those of Orbx (LOWI - ESSA - KSAN),  Aerosoft  (LIMC   Professional - LIRA - LIRN), Flightbeam (KDEN - KMSP) and many others, with TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP = 10 they work regularly without stutters.

Basically I am creating a census between the apt that need TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP = 9 to have no stutters and those that with TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP = 10 they work regularly so that depending on my flight plan I can choose which TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP considering that with 10 I get a perfect scenario with fast loading and no texture blurring for the whole fly.
