This looks superb and exactly what I had hoped from xEnviro, however I'm very keen to see what the XP12 clouds and sky look like in the video due shortly

One person did this on their own, probably after their day job.

That is truly commendable and a great job done!

et your point is, LR as a company couldn't spare the time and I am somehow unable to understand that? 😄

Yes - LR is working through different items sequentially, and "better looking/performing clouds" was on the list, but other things were ahead of them. There is a constant barrage of users requesting this and that and everyone has a favourite "must have" item on that list (mine is bird songs that are correct for the time of day and season and geographical area and I CAN`T believe that this wasn´t accomplished yet 😡).

Clouds was behind things like "VR" and "Move to Vulkan" and some other things...and for me personally that was a sound decision. Would they liked to have better clouds 3 years ago? Definitely.

Everyone has different priorities - and fortunately we have different flight simulators to choose from these days with different emphasis on different aspects of flight simulation. No one minds having beautiful clouds, of course, me neither (I just want the bird songs first! 😉 )

I've been trying the demo around to see how it looks like in XP11 and for what it's worth, I've changed the settings to these:

clouds/draw=1

clouds/resolution_ratio=0.3
clouds/skip_fragments=2
clouds/maximum_drawing_distance=325000.0

clouds/cloud_map_scale=0.000012
clouds/base_noise_scale=0.0000139
clouds/detail_noise_scale=0.000333

clouds/sun_gain=0.25
clouds/ambient_gain=0.40

Otherwise if you're on a tight perf budget and can tolerate the aliasing along the edges:

clouds/draw=1

clouds/resolution_ratio=0.25
clouds/skip_fragments=2
clouds/maximum_drawing_distance=200000.0

clouds/cloud_map_scale=0.00001
clouds/base_noise_scale=0.00001
clouds/detail_noise_scale=0.00027

clouds/sun_gain=0.25
clouds/ambient_gain=0.40

I've tried under a few different conditions and they were overall not too bad (for me) and they were not affecting much the perfs on my test system (9700K+2070S). Should you have more powerful rigs you might want to raise resolution and lower skip fragments of course.

Just to mention.... I think @BiologicalNanobot did an absolutely incredible job... if I was LR I'd have snapped him up 🙂

Thank you! I have been working on it since last year, very happy to see that people are enjoying it.

PC specs: i5-12400F, RTX 3070 Ti and 32 GB of RAM.

Simulators I'm using: X-Plane 12, Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) and FlightGear.

Looks great!

How about compatibility with ASXP and UWXP plz?

It is compatible with ASXP, but not UWXP.

... and with xVison?

The author states that it is not compatible with XVision - it might be possible, though, to disable the cloud features in your XVision solution (which I'm going to test with the Demo version shortly).

The cloud don't look as good as MSFS but they enhanced XP11 greatly. Great addons so far. I like it.  Finally a plugin that is using my extra GPU power.

Willkommen zurück!

And if you like clouds...I think you will like what the future holds for X-Plane 😉

I'm listening.

I'm very curious if they are going to toss this to a third-party like Simul trueSKY.

I have no idea what the internal LR stance is on integrations like this, but "letting someone else handle this beast" seems like a good idea for a small team.

Very much doubt it.... using 3rd party tech does not seem to be LR's thing

And I don't think they will need to. From what I've seen with sky colors, they are very likely doing multiple scattering, which means it is a given that it will look better than ES atmospherics. If they are indeed doing multiple scattering, we should also see things like like Venus' belt (Earth's self shadowing)

For clouds, I have no idea. If it is anything like the sky colors from the trailers, we might be in for a treat though.

It should be mostly compatible with xVision for shader tweaks other than fog & scattering.

I can confirm that it co-exists with XVision, having disabled fog and scattering, as well as the cloud options. However, while the new cloud depiction is exciting, with the demo's default settings it inflicts a significant hit on my personal frame rates - I am running a Strix 1080ti mildly OCd at 1708MHz serving a 34-inch ASUS 100Hz curved monitor, with an undervolted Ryzen 5900X easily peaking around 4.9 MHz, on an ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero motherboard, M2 2TB SSD and VRAM for Africa. Usual fps average is 70 in XP clear weather. It drops to about 55 using the plugin in clear weather, and plummets to sometimes 25 when we are in or near cloud, with the ghosting BiologicalNanobot warns about, and some mild stuttering. Not surprising, though - as the author warns, volumetric clouds hammer frame rates. Much praise is deserved, nevertheless, for this, particularly because others have tried and failed to achieve similar results - and charged a great deal more for it.
