Earthquake in Melbourne

Featured Replies

Hope all of our friends in Melbourne are fine following the earthquake. Looks like a 5.8 but this is the largest earthquake in Australia for centuries as this is not a normal place for these to happen. Looks like a lot of historical properties are gone for good after this as they were not designed to withstand an earthquake of this size, this will mean further job losses, business losses and people displaced from homes and apartments, Melbourne has been through a lot already, tough times ahead

Yeah i was in bed and around 9-930amish my windows were shuddering. Now my windows normally shudder because the place i live is well not very sturdy. So i thought it might be a dog resting on the wall having a scratch. But nope was defiantly a EQ shudder. Everyday an adventure. Oh and i dont live in Melbourne. I'm North in Bendigo 175km away.

My family in the area felt it and while they were surprised, it wasn't bad for them.

According to one report, Australia gets earthquakes like this about once every ten years.

Eastern suburbs of Melbourne here. Got a pretty reasonable shake for about 30-45 secs. Just another thing to add to the fun times we're having here at the moment.

It was rated as a 5.8-6.0 earthquake, felt as far away as Sydney (1000km / 600miles) away.

Yea  was susprised  when  they  showed  a map of  Australia  on  where   it  was  felt, so unless they made  a  error  on the  map.  Anyway  checked on line and was  felt  in Adelaide  and  Canberra, Sydney  and  Tasmania

New Zealand is trying to crash headlong into Australia I guess.

On a serious note hope everyone is ok there.  Where I live, I sit on top of a major fault line and if we have "the big one" I don't relish the thought.

Luckily the centre of it was out in the country-side and quite deep.  No one hurt, and virtually no damage - part of the top of one old 2-storey brick building came down but they reckon it may have been a dodgy wall to start with.  Cheers.

Apparently we are heading in both directions, it is our North Island that is moving towards Australia and our South Island that is moving away from Australia, the South Island moves faster by about an inch or two a year, which doesn't sound like much in our brains, considering that the earth is quadbillions of years old this movement is substantial over the earths timeline, but not our perception of time

yep   was  about  10  km  deep if the  centre  of  was  melbourne  than  you would  have  seen  lots  more  damage,  so  it  was  lucky  the  centre of it  was  way in the  country
